January 2008 Newsletter

Message to Our Students

Dancing For A Reason

This year we will embark on helping our students dance for a reason.  Some people dance for health reasons or social reasons.  Others dance because they cant imagine not dancing, but we challenge all of our students to dance for a reason and find more meaning behind this beautiful hobby.  We at DWG dance and teach because we love it but also to help others in need.  In January of 2008 we plan to dance for a reason to help a special student named Juanita who has run into some unexpected health problems and needs our help.  She will receive all of the money from our fundraiser on January 31, 2008 at Red Maple.  If you want to join us in dancing for a reason this year please do!  It will make your dance experience even more meaningful!  We hope for each of you that 2008 brings you joy, health and happiness!  Happy New Year and we hope to see you at Red Maple!

Sincerely,
Grace & Hugo

Great Latina Women In History

Lola Rodriguez de Tio
(1843-1924)

Revolutionary poet, and highly regarded intellectual, Lola Rodriguez wrote what became the national anthem of Puerto Rico's rebellion against the Spanish Rule in her time.  Because of this the Spanish exiled her from Puerto Rico time and time again which only inflamed her activism and inspired her to write.  She is another strong Latina in Puerto Rican history who lived in Cuba after being exiled.  There, she established the Cuban Acadamey of Arts in 1910.

Hugo's Salsa Tips

Hugo Salsa Concept

Tip #1: Dancing to the music is not only about dancing to the beat. Even though you must always dance to the beat, you want to make sure that you also dance to the changes in the music. So many times I see people dancing the same way to different songs. It is great to dance salsa because of all the different breaks, compositions, instruments, etc. which can be taken advantage of while dancing. Practice and learn how to listen to the music. The more you know about the music the better dancer you can become.

You may want to check out our next workshop on Feb 23rd. Details are in Topic 2 of this newsletter.

Tip #2: Dancing technique is crucial if you want to continue improving in your dancing abilities. This is why even the most simple technique on how to properly change your weight during the basic step is extremely important. I have noticed students in our intermediate/advanced lessons performing the basic steps without the proper technique. An improvement in the proper way to perform basic steps can make a world of difference. You may want to practice your basic steps in front of a mirror or record yourself dancing to see if your steps look smooth, effortless, and with style. Do not be afraid to take a private lesson. It help you look better and feel better when you are dancing.

Women’s Only Workshop

Workshop #1 - Cross Body Lead Arm Styling Drills (1:00 -2:45 pm): Arm styling can be one of the most difficult things to get used to when you first begin and even more difficult when you decide you want to do the “crane”, the “palmtree”, “the flamenco palm tree” and other technical arm movements. Have you ever had your arm stuck in a strange position while dancing and then had to lift it up to get back into closed position? NOT ANY MORE! Grace decided it was time for some Drills so here it is! A two hour drill class that will prepare you to not be stuck in weird positions ever again while dancing.

Men & Women’s Workshops

Workshop #3 - Balance & Spinning Technique w/Grace & Hugo, Leading Double Turns (3:00-4:00 pm): Our balance and spinning workshop is the most popular workshop we have ever given. Time and time again we have been requested to do this workshop for our students. Learn sound and safe techniques on how to balance and do doubles yourself and on others. Men, its about time you begin your double turns! Do I hear a triple?

Workshop #4 - Salsa Dips (4:00-5:00 pm): Develop the skill of dipping your partner with one hand. Ladies will learn the proper back and pelvic placement, developing the skill to carry your own weight which is essential while dipping! Learn the “player dip” and if we have time, the “Embrace Dip!” used in Grace & Hugo’s latest team choreography!

St. Thomas is known as an idyllic vacation spot today, but its history is not so peaceful. In the 18th century, the island was at the center of a bustling pirate culture, as swashbuckling pirates such as Blackbeard and Drake traded stolen wares in the port of Charlotte Amalie. This world-renowned Caribbean island is home to amazing beaches, gorgeous sea and landscapes and unbelievable duty-free shopping.

One of the largest islands in the Eastern Caribbean, Puerto Rico's landscape encompasses mountains, underground caves, coral reefs, white-sand beaches and an incredibly massive rain forest that supplies fresh water to most of the island. At the same time San Juan, the capital of the commonwealth, is a big city with a bustling business district, glitzy resorts and casinos, as well as one of the most stunning examples of colonial life in the Western world.

On the north coast of Hispaniola, surrounded by beautiful mountain slopes and exotic foliage, sits Labadee®, Royal Caribbean's private paradise. This exclusive destination offers pristine beaches, breathtaking scenery and spectacular water activities. We even have an amazing new Aqua Park for kids. Regardless of where you go, you'll find yourself embraced by the beautiful landscape. Labadee's native charm, along with its natural beauty, make this a destination not to be missed, and only Royal Caribbean can take you there.

Ranazul Restaurant
Ranazul RestaurantThis is, without a doubt, one of the loveliest restaurants I have been to in years. In a word this location is impeccable: Impeccable service, Impeccable Drinks, Impeccable Wine selections and Impeccable food that is out of this world. The food is five stars for the price of a three star restaurant! The serving sizes are just right and eating here will take you on a delightful journey to taste buds you never knew existed. The ambiance is ultra sheik with sumptuously soft leather chairs, sensitive lighting, and a great sound system for all to enjoy. This location also boasts an incredible mini-gallery of art for the truly creative collector. After leaving this location guests are enchanted. It’s a rarity to find a restaurant that feels like home but with a royal appeal that leaves you wanting for one more dessert and one more bottle of vino porfavor! I highly recommend that you take the time to reserve a table at this wonderful restaurant and become one of Ranazul’s guests at last; you will certainly go home completely satisfied and feeling like royalty!
