April 2008

Message to Our Students

Dear All,

Happy Spring everyone! We have great news! We will be moving to our New Saturday Evening location on June 14, 2008The Grand Ballroom @ The Belvedere: The room is on the first floor of the beautiful & historic Belvedere Hotel.  The bathrooms are beautiful and they have valet parking, street parking & a nearby parking garage. To top it off, the 13th floor is just an elevator ride up where you can enjoy a drink and sit and watch live music, but if you want to dance come to The Grand Ballroom downstairs where we have more room!  Spread the news!  We will begin by enjoying The Grand Ballroom on Thursday May 8th in the GRAND BALLROOM on the 12th floor. The Grand Ballroom will have the honor of using several of The Belvedere's best ballrooms for our salsa dancing.  The Grand Ballroom is the most beautiful room I have ever seen with vaulted ceilings and detailed moldings worth their weight in gold! We hope to see you there & plan to eventually enjoy every single ballroom The Belvedere has to offer!

Rolando is working on designing their website now to have everything updated and ready to go by June! Reminder: Dont forget to check out our field trip information to the Philadelphia Salsa Congress happening July 3-6th!  Thank you again for your support and we hope to see you on Thursday May 8th!

Sincerely,
Grace, Hugo & the DWG Team

Great Latina Women In History

Zaida Oquendo

Zaida Oquendo
(Puerto Rico)

Zaida Oquendo is another great Latina Woman.  Born in Jayuya, Puerto Rico, she became a nurse who has helped deliver hundreds of babies into the world.  While a nurse she met her husband who was a prominent doctor and director of a hospital in Ponce, Puerto Rico. He later became a psychiatrist for the VA in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.  After having 5 children her husband fell ill with Alzheimer's disease and she had to take care of him, work and raise 5 young boys alone.  Hearing stories like this one can sometimes make you gasp, but through it all Zaida managed to raise 5 successful sons who love their family and do all they can to help her live comfortably.  Its women like Zaida and our last Latina of the month (Maria Crespo) that are great examples of sacrifice, love and strength.

Zaida Oquendo is the mother of my wonderful husband, Hugo Badillo.  In a time of emotional turmoil she raised the smartest, most loyal and loving person I have ever known.  Its because of Great Latina Women like her that I am not afraid to have children myself.  One of the kindest and sweetest people I have ever met, Zaida still lives in Puerto Rico where she cares for the elderly helping them have dignity during this sensitive period in their lives.  We are blessed and proud to announce Zaida Oquendo as a great Latina in "our" History.  We love you mami!

Love, Grace & Hugo

Jessica's' Salsa Tips

Jessica's' Salsa Tips

Tip#1: Men, have you ever suspected why a lady does not want to dance with you? Do you take it personally? This is a sensitive and somewhat uncomfortable (pun intended) topic that I think should be addressed! Guys, I hate to break it to you, but pain is the number one reason why women might not want to dance with you! The second runner up is exhaustion and/or needing a break. Other factors are poor hygiene, and either a rough or a non-existent lead. Almost NEVER is the reason your level of dancing.

Tip #2: Protecting your partner: Contact with other people is bound to happen on a crowded dance floor. If you've been dancing for any length of time, chances are you've been stepped on or bumped. But I want to talk about men who lead their ladies into other couples -- repeatedly. They are simply not paying attention to the space they're dancing in, or to the people around them. Guys, I cannot stress enough: protecting your lady is your NUMBER ONE concern during dancing! She is FOLLOWING you. You are in control of the dance.

DWG Instructor

YOU SMELL!

Hugo Salsa Concept

This picture above is so adorable & funny that I had to leave it on this month! We all smell.. some good.. some bad.. some really funkylicious.  Its okay, you arent alone.  Some of us dont use deodorant and its a cultural thing.  Well, we love all cultures in America but cant stand to smell the funk that may come along with that culture.  Pretty please with sugar on top, can you use deodorant?  Your future spouse and dance partner will really appreciate it and your teacher will too! ha ha.. Feel the funk-dont smell it!

St. Thomas is known as an idyllic vacation spot today, but its history is not so peaceful. In the 18th century, the island was at the center of a bustling pirate culture, as swashbuckling pirates such as Blackbeard and Drake traded stolen wares in the port of Charlotte Amalie. This world-renowned Caribbean island is home to amazing beaches, gorgeous sea and landscapes and unbelievable duty-free shopping.

One of the largest islands in the Eastern Caribbean, Puerto Rico's landscape encompasses mountains, underground caves, coral reefs, white-sand beaches and an incredibly massive rain forest that supplies fresh water to most of the island. At the same time San Juan, the capital of the commonwealth, is a big city with a bustling business district, glitzy resorts and casinos, as well as one of the most stunning examples of colonial life in the Western world.

On the north coast of Hispaniola, surrounded by beautiful mountain slopes and exotic foliage, sits Labadee®, Royal Caribbean's private paradise. This exclusive destination offers pristine beaches, breathtaking scenery and spectacular water activities. We even have an amazing new Aqua Park for kids. Regardless of where you go, you'll find yourself embraced by the beautiful landscape. Labadee's native charm, along with its natural beauty, make this a destination not to be missed, and only Royal Caribbean can take you there.

Ranazul Restaurant
Ranazul RestaurantThis is, without a doubt, one of the loveliest restaurants I have been to in years. In a word this location is impeccable: Impeccable service, Impeccable Drinks, Impeccable Wine selections and Impeccable food that is out of this world. The food is five stars for the price of a three star restaurant! The serving sizes are just right and eating here will take you on a delightful journey to taste buds you never knew existed. The ambiance is ultra sheik with sumptuously soft leather chairs, sensitive lighting, and a great sound system for all to enjoy. This location also boasts an incredible mini-gallery of art for the truly creative collector. After leaving this location guests are enchanted. It’s a rarity to find a restaurant that feels like home but with a royal appeal that leaves you wanting for one more dessert and one more bottle of vino porfavor! I highly recommend that you take the time to reserve a table at this wonderful restaurant and become one of Ranazul’s guests at last; you will certainly go home completely satisfied and feeling like royalty!
