Message to Our Students:
Stop Salsa Violence

Dear All,

Salsa Violence? Say What? You are probably thinking "What in the world is Salsa Violence?"

Every salsa dancer has been stepped on at least once or twice, but after you have been dancing for a few years you tend to see more and more injuries happen on the dance floor. I cant tell you how many times I myself have stepped off the dance floor with injuries, bruises, wounds, or severe pain because my partner didn't watch out for other dancers or another couple near us was just out of control.

A friend of ours from Puerto Rico named Esteban told us about this great website called www.salsacroatia.net that is spreading the message to stop the salsa violence on the floor. They have good articles speaking on this issue and are trying to spread their mission around the world

"Our mission is to educate dancers and motivate instructors in dance schools to teach them salsa dance floor manners."

As a company we have always taught Salsa Etiquette, and how to dance in your own slot, keeping your partner as safe as possible, but this doesn't always happen. This month our salsa tips below will help you focus on manners on the dance floor and we recommend that you check out their website and spread the word! Lets keep our partners safe and sound so we can all enjoy dancing on the floor!

Fundraiser Update: DWG helped raise $21,000 for Dance For The Cure to help support research on Esophageal Cancer, the disease Grace's father died from! Thank you to everyone who participated. To check out dance for the cure photos click here.

Keep on Dancing!

DWG Students Get Married

Leigh Kramer and Jesús Rivera Wedding Dance

We had so much fun dancing with Grace!  She helped us get ready for our first dance on our big day.  Thanks to Grace’s patient, positive and lovely teaching style, we were confident, excited and ready!  We really did have a wonderful time on the dance floor, with our loved ones and friends cheering the whole time.  Thanks so much for everything, and we look forward to learning more with you.

Private Lessons

Should I Do Private Lessons?

Grace's private lessons focus 50% of what you want/your goals and 50% of what you need. Private dance lessons are available on a very limited basis due to high demand in the summer and fall.

Grace typically works with dancers who truly want to move forward from one level to the next, or with a dancer who needs work on something specific, whether it be remembering patterns or styling of some sort. Choreography private lessons are available as well to help you work out the kinks of your choreography. Since Grace has judged for several competitions including the World Salsa Championship Preliminary Rounds she is well versed on what judges are looking for in competitions.

She is opening her private lesson schedule for dancers that seek technical drilling, spinning technique, styling, arm work footwork, and choreography. Typically Grace's private classes happen in the early evening from 3-8 pm 2-3 days a week. To get on her schedule please email her soon. Sometimes she can be booked up to 3 months in advance due to all of the corporate and evening events already scheduled. She wants you to get on her schedule as soon as possible! Email her at grace@dancingwithgrace.com. If she doesn't respond within 24-48 hours then she didn't receive the email! Please Send it again :0) Good luck on your dancing!

Grace's Private Slot Availability:

  • August 6th 6-7 pm (I am booked from 2-5, so I can do 1 more lesson)
  • August 13th 6-7 pm (I am booked from 2-5 so I can do 1 more lesson)
  • August 20th 5-6 & 6-7 pm (I am booked 3-4 and can do 2 more lessons)
  • August 27th 5-6 & 6-7 pm (I am booked 2-5 and can do 2 more lessons)

Helping Others Through Dance

DWG's hopes for students to not just learn to dance but to learn to love dance so much that they want to help others with it! DWG works very hard and tries to do at least 1-2 charity events per month to help raise $ for a good cause or to entertain others that wouldn't normally get to dance. Helping any of the charities we support by attending is truly doing Salsa For A Reason other than just for "our own gratification". Lets help others whenever we see the opportunity and God, yes God, will certainly reward you for it!

We want to inspire you to focus on others suffering and not your own because when we do this, suddenly we see how blessed and rich we truly are. Sometimes helping someone else helps us put things into perspective. This is why we believe it is better to give than to receive.

Orioles, Camden Yards
& Kim Marzullo

BRAVO! The Orioles does lots of charity work. Recently, they had "Noche Latina" where over 100 underprivileged Latino children were able to have transportation to and from the game, a private picnic in the bullpen with live Latin music, free hats, shirts, food vouchers and the opportunity to meet and greet the players and get their autographs. They also hired DWG to coordinate dancers at the event to create a great ambiance of dance and happiness for the children. It was truly a great experience! To check out the photos click here.

Orioles, your generosity is a seed that has been planted. It will soon bear much fruit! Thank you to all the dancers who participated!

Grace’s Salsa Tips

Grace's Salsa Tips

Stop Salsa Violence Tips
by www.salsacroatia.net

  • Don't dance unpracticed figures for which you are not certain that you will be able to lead your partner, or the partner won't be able to follow. You can do this at home, on class or somewhere next to the dance floor.
  • Do not exaggerate with spins if you can't really keep your balance so you don't hit people around you.
  • For the guys, please take care about leading your partner in empty space & not someone else’s.
  • Do not walk through the dance floor - it's meant for dancing!
  • Ladies, you can refuse to dance certain figures if you think that you will endanger other people by doing so or if think that your partner is not able to lead you properly into this figure.
  • Ladies, if you are dancing with a partner who endangers your safety or other peoples safety, you can always reject the dance and tell him where the problem is so he can improve his leading and dancing skills. Give him a copy of this article.
  • Ladies, please adjust the moves of your styling to the space you have. Uncontrolled throwing of arms or the high lifting of legs can only harms someone.
  • Guys, regulate your figures according to the dance level of you partner. Not all girls can do triple spins & complicated figures.
  • When dancing in a crowded place, make small steps & adjust your figures according to the space which is available to you.
  • Don't drink and dance. If you're drunk you are dangerous on the dance floor.

YOU SMELL SO WELL! OR DO YOU?

You Smell

We all smell.. some good.. some bad.. some really funkylicious. Its okay, you aren't alone. Sometimes the problem is that people who are already sweating put on deodorant again, on top of the last batch they used. This can amplify the deodorant smell x 10 and make you smell worse! Be careful! Some of us don't use deodorant and its a cultural thing. Well, we love all cultures in America but cant stand to smell the funk that may come along with activities that cause you to perspire more than usual. Pretty please with sugar on top, can you use deodorant? Your future spouse and dance partner will really appreciate it and your teacher will too! ha ha.. Feel the funk-dont smell it!

“Love Beyond the Mirror”

a new wrinkle formed today-
the mirror quakes and suddenly I am gray
but for a moment I did to see
the young soul that once stood before me
and when, on my shoulder, I did feel a tap
it was something telling me not to look back
beyond the mirror I will choose to see
eternity is calling out to me....

National Hispanic Youth Symposium, Maryland

National Hispanic Youth Symposium MD

Grace was one of the the Chairs at this year's National Hispanic Youth Symposium in Maryland. Students from all over Maryland came to compete for college money. This year's symposium was held at Towson Universities Cultural Arts Center. It was an amazing, emotionally charged time. Thirty Five Teenagers tried out to be in the final talent show to compete for $2000, $1000 and $500 scholarships. Famous Comedian Ernie G opened the show and 15 students performed, dance, poetry, singing and played instruments. They were all very talented and mentored by Grace on how to do a better job with their talents, how to find the judges while performing, stage make-up, stage presence and costumes. The three winners were fantastic! It was very difficult to choose the winners

Grace felt that there were other students deserving of a prize. Grace and Hugo then decided to award three scholarships for dance training and mentoring worth $10,000 to three other students in the talent show that demonstrated a lot of heart and dedication. When announcing their names they were amazed. All three of the winners thought that they lost, but in the end won more than the others and now have the chance to be mentored by Grace & Hugo! God is Great!

Along with the students astonishment our DWG Student Dance Team performed at the event and closed the show with a standing ovation! BRAVO Team! Grace was also be the MC of the National Hispanic Youth Symposium in DC.

Essential Bellydance - Intensive Course - August 17th, 2008 11am - 3pm

A high level, high technique dance class slowed down for the intermediate to advanced student that needs a reeducation or crash course in belly dance skills.

Refresh your dance vocabulary and leave the studio as a better dancer.

Urban Tahtib!  - August 17th, 2008. 4pm to 6pm (Same date as above)

Lotus Niraja presents the award winning "Urban Tahtib" choreography in a workshop. A tahtib is a long staff used by upper Egyptian men in a martial arts style dance. Learn an energetic, yet feminine, traditional, yet urban cabaret style choreography.

Bring a wooden staff, cane, or use one of the several tahtibs provided at the workshop.

Learn to a staff instead of a cane and add another prop to your repertoire!

A Tribute: "I want to pay homage to…" (in progress)

Have you ever desired to dance a tribute to your favorite bellydance star, teacher, or inspiration?

Currently in development is a workshop for advanced students who seek to create an emotional presentation of local, national, and international bellydance stars and also our famous, favorite dancers, such as: the Egyptian Greats Samia, Fifi, Dina, Mona, Soheir, and our Great Western Dancers like Morocco, Zahra Zuhair, Jillina, etc. You can do a tribute to anyone that you admire or has affected your dance journey the most.

10. DJ Corner: Featured DJ The Latin Leprechaun, Greg Fitzpatrick

Greg Fitzpatrick with Latin Leprechaun Productions

The Latin Leprechaun is a testament to Salsa and the diversity of people Salsa attracts! Greg Fitzpatrick has an Irish Cultural Heritage and loves Salsa and Latin Music in general. Not only is he a DJ but he was one of the founders of the South Central PA Salsa Meet Up Group! He spends countless hours researching music and creating his sets prior to one of his gigs. He respects other DJs a lot and has been known to learn a lot from DJ Sonero, (Last months DJ of the month). Besides being kind and generous, Greg helps other aspiring DJ's understand the history of the music and even sent you tube clips to a budding DJ in Baltimore all about salsa. He sometimes adds to the beauty of this newsletter by suggesting a CD of the month as well! His growing popularity, fantastic music selection, kindness and willingness to help is the reason why we chose The Latin Leprechaun this month!

Don't forget to let us know who your favorite DJ's are so we know who to have on the fall schedule! Email grace@dancingwithgrace.com

Helping The People Of Cambodia

Cambodia

Facts: Cambodia is a war torn nation. In 1975-1970 during the Pol Pot Regime, over 3 million Cambodians lost their lives to execution, starvation, disease & being overworked. There are many diseases including HIV/AIDS hepatitis, typid fever, malaria and other diseases that are going undiagnosed or treated due to poverty. Grace and Hugo know missionaries that are dedicating their lives to helping the people of Cambodia. If this is something that touches you and you would like to help pleae contact them through email at daniellelong06@gmail.com or send a donation to:

Sambat & Danielle Long

If you cant afford to help then just pray for these missionaries! Prayers are like GOLD to us and them! Thank you for reading this!

Help Teach The Mentally Disabled

Grace will also be going to Arundel Lodge and is looking for volunteers to come help teach the mentally disabled and retarded how to dance merengue and other latin dances. We went there a few months back and had an incredibly moving experience with all of those that we danced with. All of the members of Arundel Lodge actually learned the macarena and performed it for us before we danced and had fun with them. It was incredible. They were so adorable and got so much out of it that we wanted to go back! Would you like to join us? We will be giong on Friday evening, August 8th. Share the joy of dance with someone that cant go out to night clubs or ballrooms to enjoy themselves. Email Grace at grace@dancingwithgrace.com to let her know you want to come!
