There is a buzz about a possible Latin Grammy for this incredibly talented group of artists. Here are some of the people and places they have worked:

Member Bobby Allende was the Musical Director for Willie Colon, Marc Anthony and La India & has appeared on the Today Show, Jay Leno, CBS Morning Show, The View, The Rosie O'Donnell Show, The 2000 Grammy Awards Show, & the HBO Madison Square Garden Special with Marc Anthony. In addition to Marc Anthony, he has performed with Jennifer Lopez, Celia Cruz, George Benson, Dizzy Gillespie, Fat Joe, Dave Valentin & the Fania Allstars.

Member Ruben Rodriguez is currently the bassist for the Lincoln Center Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, & the Grammy-winning Spanish Harlem Orchestra. Other members of this orchestra have equal successes; they are so successful there is no room to write all of their accomplishments!

Happy Three Kings Day!
(Feliz Día de Los Reyes)

Three Kings Day is celebrated on January 6th, twelve days after Christmas.

Three Kings Day (also known as Epiphany) is a Christian celebration that commemorates the Biblical story of the three kings who followed the star of Bethlehem to bring gifts to Baby Jesus. The Three Kings where named Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar and they arrived in their camels to worship and bring the gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to Baby Jesus .

In Puerto Rico, as in Spain, Mexico, Cuba, and some other Latin American countries, this day is called "El Día de los Reyes". Traditionally, Three Kings Day was the gift-giving time, rather than Christmas day. In some countries, it is common for kids to cut grass or greenery on January 5th and put it in a box for the camels. In the morning of January 6th, the children would awake to find toys and gifts where they had left the food for the camels.

Grace's Salsa Tips

Grace Salsa Concept

Tip #1: Beware of salsa groups advertising to be in their social circle or what I like to call "click". Recently several of my students went to a few salsa gatherings and wrote me emails about how "clicky" things were & how people weren't even enjoying dance but more competing, challenging & showboating. This happens when dances start to get very popular. You can easily spot clicks. How you say? They tend to have only "good looking" people who "look the part". It's also interesting that you never see an overweight or unattractive one in the bunch. They also try to dance with their circle of dancers. If they do venture out of the circle to dance with others, their group tends to "judge" your every move. So beware of this type of atmosphere and join them at your own risk. We here at DWG accept every shape, size, color and make & believe that salsa is all-inclusive not TOTALLY EXCLUSIVE!

Tip #2: Regular Salsa songs last around 5 minutes, but a lot greatest salsa CDs are recorded live which means that the songs can be from 8 to 17 minutes long! Since, I have been around the scene long enough to know this I really love it when someone asks me to dance after 2 - 3 minutes of the song has gone by; this makes the time on my feet bearable and also allows you to dance to the "meaty" part of the song if that is what you like. Since I am prone to have more sensitive, aching feet I appreciate when someone gives me this leeway and it also will give someone time to ask you to dance instead of you always asking. Sometimes courtesy and patience can be a dancer's best friend!

January Class Schedule

Ed Borja is back for 2 Tuesday nights at the Promenade before teaching with Grace on the Salsa Cruise in mid-January! Come Say hello and show your appreciation for his service to our country in Iraq!

  • 7-8 p.m.  Salsa 101: Beginner moves for slick grooves
  • 7-8p.m. Intermediate Technique: Work on all the little details that have slipped through the cracks in your foundation. Come with questions and get answers.
  • 8-9 pm Beginner Intermediate:  Beginner styling for men & women.
  • 8-9 pm Combination Class: You must know a cross body lead with a turn and how to lead it to take this class. INT/ADV students ONLY.

Dress Code:
Casual, comfortable sweats or yoga pants, (preferably) salsa practice shoes (for turns and spins on a wooden dance floor). If you don't have salsa shoes, you can wear your evening dance shoes. Tennis shoes will inhibit your spins and may ruin your knees over time. You can go to the DWG Store to see if you find something you like.  Or go on line and check out shoes like Supadance or International.  They can get pricy but make a world of difference when you dance.

Check out Grace's Shoe Clues Chapter in her Salsa With Grace Instructional Video so she can explain why you need good dance shoes, which should you buy first and how to take care of them! Purchase our Salsa Videos.

  10. Have the opportunity to be in one of our next instructional videos.
  11. Be featured with the company in Expresión Magazine.
  12. Be Part of the family of DWG instructors and more importantly help the poor and needy through dance.

DWG is looking for people with a joyous heart and someone who can take constructive criticism. Egomaniacs and people who love to gossip are not welcome in our company. We train our instructors in dance and humility. If you have Tuesday and at least one Friday or Saturday evening free every week and are a person of integrity who knows how to keep their word and be on time or die trying then please schedule a private audition with Grace Badillo. We look forward to meeting with YOU! Serious inquires only.

Students who have the dream of becoming instructors should only apply after being trained for 2+ years. If you have rhythm and move fluently you can also take private classes for 1 year and depending on your dedication and level of dance you may be the perfect person for our team. We might even consider you for an assistant instructor position. If you are interested, please contact Grace Badillo.

Administrative Assistant

DWG is looking for a dynamic person with serious organizational skills that can help Grace keep the business running smoothly. This person must have exceptional people skills and be very well versed in Outlook, Word, Excel, and computers in general. This person would be the Instructor Manager and keep their schedules straight along with prepping contracts for large activities, helping out with booth preparations at festivals, taking calls, mailing on-line video sales, class sign-ins and be willing to donate some of their time to charitable events throughout the year. Grace is looking for a "long-timer", someone who can stay with us for more than a year and grow with the company. This position is part-time and hours are really flexible as you can work from home, but must have your own personal computer and be able to type more than 60 words per minute.

If you are interested, please contact Grace Badillo. My last assistant had family issues and had to leave but we still love her dearly! Thanks Stephanie! We will miss You!
