If you have never had the chance to enjoy a live orchestra of salsa or you haven't had your 2007 fix of live salsa music yet then mark your calendars because DWG is bringing the hottest new band hitting the charts with their new album that is taking the nation by storm! There is a buzz about a possible Latin Grammy for this incredibly talented group of artists. Here are some of the people and places they have worked:

Member Bobby Allende was the Musical Director for Willie Colon, Marc Anthony and La India & has appeared on the Today Show, Jay Leno, CBS Morning Show, The View, The Rosie O'Donnell Show, The 2000 Grammy Awards Show, & the HBO Madison Square Garden Special with Marc Anthony. In addition to Marc Anthony, he has performed with Jennifer Lopez, Celia Cruz, George Benson, Dizzy Gillespie, Fat Joe, Dave Valentin & the Fania Allstars.

Member Ruben Rodriguez is currently the bassist for the Lincoln Center Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, & the Grammy-winning Spanish Harlem Orchestra. Other members of this orchestra have equal successes; they are so successful there is no room to write all of their accomplishments!

Grace's Salsa Tips

Grace Salsa Concept

Tip #1: Those of you taking classes please be very aware of instructors teaching moves that are for choreography and not for social dancing. Not all teachers understand that there is a difference between moves for performances and moves for the social dance floor. Some instructors take moves from choreographies they see after purchasing a salsa congress video. These moves CAN be done with lots of practice when you have a steady partner, but should not be attempted on the average social dancer on the floor. In the past I have actually seen men's fingers get broken and women's muscles torn. Please be a careful and considerate lead and learn the difference between choreography and social dance patterns.

Tip #2: Many times there are different age groups that come to a social event. For example, I have seen 25 to 65 year old dancers at Gardel’s having a great time. For those of you who love to dance with anyone please do not exclude men/women who happen to be 15 to 30 years older than you. They might teach you a thing or two ha ha! Sometimes age or hair color can scare someone away but let’s have sensitive hearts this Valentines Month and ask someone, who you wouldn’t normally ask, to dance. Gals, this goes for you too! Make a man’s night and ask him to dance! I know that when I am not a "spring chicken" anymore it will make my night if someone younger than myself asks me to dance!

1. Tuesday Nights at the Promenade

Promendade on Tuesdays

All Classes at the Promenade are $10 Each Unless Otherwise Stated

  • 7-8 p.m.  Salsa 101: Beginner moves for slick grooves
  • 7-8p.m. Intermediate Technique: Traveling Patterns for the True Salsero and Salsera.
  • 8-9 pm Beginner Intermediate:  Beginner-Int Patterns. Even if you are an intermediate-advanced dancer this class can help you with beginner-intermediate patterns that you may not know. Not all patterns have to be intense, long or complicated. Sometimes the uncomplicated patterns are the most fun.
  • 8-9 pm Combination Class: We will be adding traveling patterns from the 7 o'clock class to this Int/Adv combination. You must know a Cross Body Lead With A Turn and How To lead it to take this class. INT/ADV students ONLY.

Dress Code:
Casual, comfortable sweats or yoga pants, (preferably) salsa practice shoes (for turns and spins on a wooden dance floor). If you don't have salsa shoes, you can wear your evening dance shoes. Tennis shoes will inhibit your spins and may ruin your knees over time. You can go to the DWG Store to see if you find something you like or go on line and check out shoes like Supadance or International. They can get pricy but make a world of difference when you dance.

Check out Grace's Shoe Clues Chapter in her Salsa With Grace Instructional Video so she can explain why you need good dance shoes, which should you buy first and how to take care of them! Purchase our Salsa Videos.

10.  Student Emails: Read me!

Dear Grace,

Oh my starz, I literally LAUGHED OUT LOUD with the article 'The Welcoming Face of Salsa'. I, too, can relate to weekly family gatherings "DISCO NIGHT' at my mother's house every single Friday. She had surgery a couple of months ago and we haven't been able to resume them. However, last Friday we put on the Salsa channel on cable and I taught her what I've learned. Tonight, we're watching your wonderful gift from this past Tuesday's class that you gave us. Anyway, my family and I complete love for dance and music, also has a broad range from Barbara Streisand, Neil Diamond to Carlos Santana and Richard Clayderman (he's a pianist) AND QUEEN (lol--another one bites the dust) Reading the article made me think of my family and the similarities you and I share.

Grace, your spirit, respect and love for culture is so contagious and beautiful. You're influence will make a difference and change lives...as you've changed mine! You're so down to earth, fun and energetic. I just wanted to say 'thanks' for brightening up my day and my life.

Keisha Cheeks

======================================

Dear Grace, (JHU Classes)

The class was a lot of fun and I enjoyed it very much. The instructors were very good teachers and I learned some new moves. I am looking forward to coming back next time.
