If you have never had the chance to enjoy a live orchestra of salsa or you haven't had your 2007 fix of live salsa music yet then mark your calendars because DWG is bringing the hottest new band hitting the charts with their new album that is taking the nation by storm! There is a buzz about a possible Latin Grammy for this incredibly talented group of artists. Here are some of the people and places they have worked:

Member Bobby Allende was the Musical Director for Willie Colon, Marc Anthony and La India & has appeared on the Today Show, Jay Leno, CBS Morning Show, The View, The Rosie O'Donnell Show, The 2000 Grammy Awards Show, & the HBO Madison Square Garden Special with Marc Anthony. In addition to Marc Anthony, he has performed with Jennifer Lopez, Celia Cruz, George Benson, Dizzy Gillespie, Fat Joe, Dave Valentin & the Fania Allstars.

Member Ruben Rodriguez is currently the bassist for the Lincoln Center Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, & the Grammy-winning Spanish Harlem Orchestra. Other members of this orchestra have equal successes; they are so successful there is no room to write all of their accomplishments!

Grace's Salsa Tips

Grace Salsa Concept

Tip #1: If you were a person that jogs 1-30 miles a week I assume that you would wear jogging shoes and not heels or steel toed Timberlands. Getting the necessary equipment for your favorite activity is important. When dancing, the average intermediate dancer dances 5-30 miles per Saturday night depending on how long you stay and how many dances you dance. Still, there are many people who refuse to purchase dance shoes because they have tried once and they didn't like them. There are many great companies that make shoes in various styles that fit your foot better than others. My advice is, if you are a dancer, buy dance shoes. Protect the muscles, bones and ligaments that give you the ability to have fun all night and get the proper "equipment" for your hobby. Years down the road your body will thank you! Find shoes on-line at our website or at local retailers like The Promenade Dance Sport Facility. A good shoe should run between $80 - $175.

Tip #2: Better etiquette: This one is for the guys…The next time you ask a lady to dance and the song ends, try escorting your partner to the place you received her and thank her no matter how bad or good the dance was!

DVD of the Month

Fania Allstars live in Africa

Fania Allstars live in Africa

This DVD, Fania Allstars with Celia Cruz – Live in Africa will take you back in time to 1974 in Kinshasa Zaire. The concert was part of the legendary Rumble in the Jungle heavy weight title fight between the George Foreman and Muhammad Ali. Their performance on the first day was so phenomenal that they were invited back two days later for an encore performance to a crowd of 80,000 people. You will find all the great legends performing together, Johnny Pacheco, Celia Cruz, Roberto Roena, Ray Barreto, Cheo Feliciano, Hector Lavoe, Larry Harlow, Ismael Miranda, Ismael Quintana, Bobby Valentin, Yomo Toro, Santos Colon, Pupi Lagarretta, Nicky Marrero, and even Jorge Santana, who has an incredible guitar solo on El Raton, a fabulous Cha Cha sung by Cheo Feliciano. Play this DVD while you’re getting ready to go one of our many classes.

  • 8-9 pm Salsa Improvers:  Beginner-Int Patterns. Even if you are an intermediate-advanced dancer this class can help you with beginner-intermediate patterns that you may not know. Not all patterns have to be intense, long or complicated. Sometimes the uncomplicated patterns are the most fun.

In the month of April our newest instructor (Gina Tona) &Luis J. will be teaching you Latin Dances to include Cha-Cha-Cha, Rumba and Samba! So here's your opportunity! Hugo and I will not be teaching at the Promenade in April (to take some much needed time off).

Class in April every Tuesday will focus primarily on cha-cha-cha, but time will be spent on one of the other dances mentioned above each week. Beginner and Improver levels will be taught, so come out and get a full taste of what Latin dancing has to offer.
Es muy sabroso!

  • Beginner Cha-Cha-Cha &Latin Dances (Other dances will be Samba or Rumba)
  • 7-8p.m. Intermediate Technique: Cross Body Lead Technique for men and women. Cross body leads are the "spinal cord" of salsa. Everything branches off from this so it's crucial to your dancing! We hope to see you there.
  • 8-9 p.m. Cha-Cha Improvers

Grace and Hugo will return to our normal Tuesday salsa schedule in May 2007.

Dress Code:
Casual, comfortable sweats or yoga pants, (preferably) salsa practice shoes (for turns and spins on a wooden dance floor). If you don't have salsa shoes, you can wear your evening dance shoes. Tennis shoes will inhibit your spins and may ruin your knees over time. You can go to the DWG Store to see if you find something you like or go on line and check out shoes like Supadance or International. They can get pricy but make a world of difference when you dance.

Check out Grace's Shoe Clues Chapter in her Salsa With Grace Instructional Video so she can explain why you need good dance shoes, which should you buy first and how to take care of them! Purchase our Salsa Videos.

Directions:
Promenade Dance Sport Facility is located on 2605 Lord Baltimore Drive.  For directions and more information click here.

8. Physical Therapy for Dancers

ALL Therapy is a Physical Therapy Practice specializing in the care of dancers, athletes and general orthopedic populations.

Recently I (Grace) had the opportunity to hear a great lecture by Dr. Lord on physical therapy for dancers. I believe she is very qualified to help any dancer with their particular needs and hope that if you find yourself with an annoying muscle problem or other orthapedic problem you will seek the attention of a good physical therapist that not only understands the body but the DANCER!

Dr. Aisha L. Lord is the founder and owner of ALL Therapy and a lifelong dancer. Dr. Lord has incorporated dance and fitness into every aspect of her life. She has an extensive history in dance originating at the age of 3. Dr. Lord trained at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Performing Arts in New York City, New York. Dr. Lord co-founded a dance company at the University of Delaware, where she later received her Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Sports Science. Afterwards, Dr. Lord performed nationally and internationally with a critically acclaimed dance company, while simultaneously receiving her Master of Science and Doctorate degrees in Physical Therapy from Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City.

As a Physical Therapist, Dr. Lord currently works in the areas of inpatient & outpatient rehabilitation, and home care. With establishment of the ALL Therapy Private Practice Clinic in Washington DC in 2006, Dr. Lord has the opportunity to intertwine her education and experience in physical therapy rehabilitation with her love for dancing, fitness and helping others. Dr. Lord presents seminars and workshops to Dance & Athletic populations on the subjects of Injury Prevention & Rehabilitation.
