Message To Our Students

Grace and 8 Y Mas

Thank you so much for supporting us at the 8 y Más Event. It was a very classy, respectable event with dancers from Baltimore, DC, VA, PA and NY! The performance was stellar and we all had a wonderful time. To check out pictures from this event go to our Photo Gallery.

To All Intermediate and Advanced Dancers at Gardel’s:
The floor downstairs is getting packed Saturday nights. Lets start to claim the upstairs floor where we have more space and seats to rest ! I love it up there. All the good dancers know that the only half comfortable space to dance is on the outside of the 1st floor dance floor because you will get clobbered on the inside; instead of fighting for space lets use the second floor for our stomping ground. Let's meet me on the second floor where we even have the freedom to dance big! Don't forget to check out the performance class under the Promenade Heading!

This month I would love to get a group together to take lessons from Eileen Torres at Legends (Temple Hills, MD). She will be teaching on "1" on Thursday nights. I would really enjoy taking you all with me. Let's enjoy the free buffet and have a good time. Email me at Grace@dancingwithgrace.com to be put on the email list for this night. We will get there by 8 pm and leave early for those who will be working early the next day! Let's do something new. Email Grace@dancingwithgrace.com!

Thanks again and I hope to see you this month at Gardel’s, Legends and at the Rayn Fall Workshops.

Emails from Students Who went to the 8 Y Más Event

Dear Grace,

Just wanted to make contact with you to tell you in writing how much I enjoyed the "Music & Dance" in celebration of your birthday. The Band was excellent. They were tight and the music was very good. I also enjoyed the group performance of the Dancing with Grace Instructors,in fact you guys should have done an encore! The food was the only low point of the night and I understand from talking with Hugo that was out of your control.

Thanks for a great night & your vision of the need to both Dance and support the Music and musicians.

Sincerely yours,

B. Hall

==========================

Hey,

I just wanted to say that Friday night was awesome!

It must have taken a lot of work and a talented dedicated individual to drive it all: You are awesome and so was the event.

Take good care,

-Carlos

Salsa Music CD of the Month

Al Fin
NG Squared

Buy CD

For the CD of the month I’m straying away from my usual classic salsa picks. NG2 is a new group that caught my attention in a good way. Their debut CD ìAl fin! is a great CD all around. The first song “La Nueva Generación” is fast tempo salsa that sets the tone for the CD. Songs # 2 – “No Me Perdones” and # 6 – “Como Si Fuera Fàcil” were written by Victor Manuelle and are off the hook. I was very pleased with the whole CD, which is rare compliment that I do not usually lend to any new salsa artist. Remember I’m the salsa classica fanatic.

DWG Performance Class
May-September 2007

This is not a session. Grace has designed this class to be every Tuesday from 7-8 pm. From May to October 2007. We will be teaching you the DWG performance we did at the 8 y Mas Event! The more you come the more you will learn; in choreography classes we repeat and really work on technique. Please wear comfortable clothing. No Jeans. At the end of this class we will perform this at one of DWG's Venues. NO WORRIES! You can also learn this and not perform it. Come to our 1st class May 1, 2007.

Grace's Salsa Tips

Grace Salsa Concept

Tip #1:So many times I hear people insulting other styles of dance like Mambo or "Salsa on 2". Lets give each style the respect they deserve and love the many facets of dance. I love dancing on 1-LA Style, but this doesn't make it better than any other style… just different. Embrace the differences and leave the garbage talk behind!

Tip #2: A few weeks ago I danced with a guy that did a move that put my arm under his arm while I walked around. My arm then moved beneath his. This would have been fine if this move kept me DRY! After this move my entire arm was sweaty with his perspiration. I was so grossed out I immediately left, went home and took a shower! EW, come on guys, you know when you are sweating; and you complain when women say no to your dance requests! Now you don’t have to wonder why. Bring an extra shirt and towel. I beg you!

DVD of the Month

Fania Allstars live in Africa

Fania Allstars live in Africa

This DVD is so good we are repeating it this month. Fania Allstars with Celia Cruz – Live in Africa will take you back in time to 1974 in Kinshasa Zaire. The concert was part of the legendary Rumble in the Jungle heavy weight title fight between the George Foreman and Muhammad Ali. Their performance on the first day was so phenomenal that they were invited back two days later for an encore performance to a crowd of 80,000 people. You will find all the great legends performing together, Johnny Pacheco, Celia Cruz, Roberto Roena, Ray Barreto, Cheo Feliciano, Hector Lavoe, Larry Harlow, Ismael Miranda, Ismael Quintana, Bobby Valentin, Yomo Toro, Santos Colon, Pupi Lagarretta, Nicky Marrero, and even Jorge Santana, who has an incredible guitar solo on El Raton, a fabulous Cha Cha sung by Cheo Feliciano. Play this DVD while you’re getting ready to go one of our many classes.

2. Tuesday Nights at the Promenade: April/May Schedules

Promendade on Tuesdays

All Classes at the Promenade are $10 Each Unless Otherwise Stated

April 2007 Schedule
(Cha-Cha-Cha, Rumba & Samba)

Have you been wanting to learn some of the other Latin dances? In the month of April we will be teaching you Latin Dances to include Cha-Cha-Cha, Rumba and Samba! So here's your opportunity! Hugo and I will not be teaching at the Promenade in April (to take some much needed time off).

Class in April every Tuesday will focus primarily on cha-cha-cha, but time will be spent on one of the other dances mentioned above each week. Beginner and Improver levels will be taught, so come out and get a full taste of what Latin dancing has to offer.

  • 7-8 p.m. Beginner Cha-Cha-Cha & Latin Dances: (Other dances will be Samba or Rumba)
  • 8-9 p.m. Cha-Cha Improvers: Come and improve on what you already know. There will be many different levels in this class. Advanced students, please be warned that this is not an advanced lesson.

NOTE: Dancing With Grace Productions will return to their usual Tuesday salsa schedule in May 2007.

May 2007 Schedule
(No Class on May 29, 2007)

  • 7-8 p.m.  Beginner Salsa: Learn important foundational salsa basics! Practice makes perfect. Don't be afraid to take this class over and over again until you are comfortable and you can then move into the 8-9 pm Salsa Improvers Class!
  • 7-8p.m. Performance Class: Learn a DWG Intermediate to Advanced Salsa choreography. This class will continue through September 2007. You are not required to take all the classes but if you want to learn it and get good take as many as you can! Students will also get the opportunity to perform this at one of DWG's Venues. $10 each.
  • 8-9 pm Salsa Improvers:  Beginner-Int Patterns. Even if you are an intermediate-advanced dancer this class can help you with beginner-intermediate patterns that you may not know. Not all patterns have to be intense, long or complicated. Sometimes the uncomplicated patterns are the most fun.
  • 8-9 pm Combination Class: You must know a Cross Body Lead With A Turn and How To lead it to take this class. INT/ADV students ONLY.

Dress Code:
Casual, comfortable sweats or yoga pants, (preferably) salsa practice shoes (for turns and spins on a wooden dance floor). If you don't have salsa shoes, you can wear your evening dance shoes. Tennis shoes will inhibit your spins and may ruin your knees over time. You can go to the DWG Store to see if you find something you like or go on line and check out shoes like Supadance or International. They can get pricy but make a world of difference when you dance.

Check out Grace's Shoe Clues Chapter in her Salsa With Grace Instructional Video so she can explain why you need good dance shoes, which should you buy first and how to take care of them! Purchase our Salsa Videos.

Directions:
Promenade Dance Sport Facility is located on 2605 Lord Baltimore Drive.  For directions and more information click here.

Dance Day Dedicated to Children

International Dance Day is April 29, 2007

"This year's Dance Day is dedicated to the children. The International Dance Council CID UNESCO, together with UNICEF, the United Nations Children's Fund, fights for measures to give children the best start in life, because proper education forms the strongest foundation for a person's future. We believe that caring for children is the cornerstone of human progress. Our primary goal is to overcome the obstacles that poverty, violence, disease and discrimination place in a child's path. Thus we advance the cause of humanity.

Dance is a basic component of personal and societal development. We recommend quality basic education in dance for all children with an emphasis on gender equality and eliminating disparities of all kinds. No child should be left without the opportunity to learn and to practice dance. Access to the art constitutes a right for every person, and children in particular. This right should be protected, in order to help meet their basic needs and reach their full potential. CID upholds dance instruction by qualified teachers at all levels of formal education, because dance constitutes a strong foundation for a person's well being."

A review from a Salsa website: "...Club ONE is home to Baltimore's hottest and largest regular Salsa night. Guest DJs visit the club to play a musical collection of some of the finest Salsa with a touch of Bachata, Cha Cha and Merengue. There is plenty of room to dance with three available dance floors. Every week this club fills up with Salseros of all ages, ethnic and economic backgrounds and levels. There is simply no other place to be on Wednesdays in Baltimore...."

Grace's Review: Club One has a nice modern feel to it. There is a small hardwood floor but plenty of room to dance on other levels, although its tile but useable. Susan Leiter teaches each week and controls the floor with ease. Check out her new website at www.alivewithdance.com For info: spleiter@aol.com or go to www.onebaltimore.com
