Message To Our Students

Sometimes I feel overwhelmed with emotion in my heart for all of you and I just have to let you know what I am thinking. There is so much love in the salsa community in Baltimore that I really feel that there isn't room for gossip and nonsense. Our students are young, not so young, rich, not so rich, tall, short, pleasantly plump, or as tiny as our very own Sasha aka "Alex". They are full of life and we cherish each and every one of them. Recently a student named Carlos said to myself and Elsybel that "your company doesn't just teach dance, we make memories" and my eyes started to puddle. It's during these moments that I thank God for my life, my job, my team, my husband, and all of you.

Thank you for sharing your lives with us.

Sincerely,

Grace Badillo

Salsa Music CD of the Month

Los Compadres
Johnny Pacheco &
Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez

Buy CD

It’s time to take it back to the old school (aka salsa classica) with Johnny Pacheco & Pete “El Conde” Rodriguez 1970 release “Los Compadres”. This classic release was one of my favorite Johnny Pacheco albums of the 70’s. “Los Compadres” shows off why Johnny Pacheco along with “El Conde” on lead vocals , was able to assert himself as one of the preeminent salsa artist in the 60’s & 70’s. There is not one bad song on this album. The 1st song “Dulce Con Dulce” is one of my favorite salsas ever and is da bomb! Song # 6 “Soy El Mejor” (I’m the Best) & #8 “Solito” (I’m alone) are both excellent medium tempo salsas. Carrrrrne! Another great song is “Moreno”, song #3, starts out as a Bolero and transitions into a salsa. All in all, “Los Compadres” is an excellent medium tempo salsa album con bastante sabor (Lot’s of Flavor)

Grace's Salsa Tips

Grace Salsa Concept

Tip #1:This happened to me last night! I have been dancing since 4 pm and arrive at a house party at 8 and start to dance. The floor is concrete covered with carpet, ouch! At 3 a.m. a dancer strolls in and asks me to dance. I am done for the night to say the least. So he asks and I say, sorry, I am leaving sweetie. He "rolls his eyes" and pulls another woman on to the floor and she is leaving too. He "rolls his eyes" again and obviously takes offense. Guys/Gals, when you ask a person to dance, please give them the option to say "no". Get over it, be courteous, give the person the benefit of the doubt (since you do not know the person’s reason for saying "no") and please don't get there that late ha ha!

Tip #2:This is to my men folk: Guys, recently I have been out almost every night of the week dancing at different locations. Please, I beg you, quit doing one combination after another where you never face your partner and look into your partners eyes once in a while. I am sick of men staring at my forehead as if I had a huge zit that needed to be squeezed. (Hey, I get facials so I know that's not the case ha ha) It's okay to dance in closed position; its okay to enjoy your partner and partake of her unique style. Its okay to look at your partner; Hugo looked at me directly many times the first time we danced together and it was delightfully different so I married him ha ha! Trust me, the connection feels amazing!

Dance Quote

"Artistic skill, therefore, does not mean artistic perfection. It remains rather a continuing medium or reflection of some step in our personal development, the perfection of which is not to be found in shape and form, but must radiate from the human soul"

Check out Grace's Shoe Clues Chapter in her Salsa With Grace Instructional Video so she can explain why you need good dance shoes, which pair you should buy first and how to take care of them! Purchase our Salsa Videos.

Student of the Month: William "Billy" Hall

William Hall

Congratulations to Billy Hall for being the Student of the Month; he will receive a new pair of dance shoes or a free private class from a DWG instructor. Billy Hall is new to our salsa community. A lover of the true essence of latin music including latin jazz Billy has been a sweet and kind student that cares about learning. Not only is he a gentleman, but sweet as the day is bright. He brings a smile to the faces of the DWG team because he truly is excited about learning and no matter what level he is (as he is growing a lot) he is humble and full of joy. Just last Saturday he missed the last half of the basketball playoffs (he loves basketball) to come to my balance and spinning technique class. Bravo Billy! I know it's hard to miss those last few games! Read his email below! We Love u Billy!, Love Grace, Hugo and the DWG Team!

Dear Grace,

Just wanted to drop you a line to thank you and compliment you on the workshop Saturday.

I thought you explained and demonstrated things wonderfully. I also read the Workshop Notes and was impressed with the exercises suggested and the clarity and succinctness your summary of the essence of dance, movement, and balance.

Balance exercise #2 reminded me of an asana we do in Yoga called appropriately the "balancing pose" which is designed to improve balance. I'm confident that with practice my ability to spin and dance "gracefully" will be greatly improved now that I understand the Why and How.

Sincerely,

Billy

7. Physical Therapy for Dancers

ALL Therapy is a Physical Therapy Practice specializing in the care of dancers, athletes and general orthopedic populations.

Recently, I (Grace) had the opportunity to hear a great lecture by Dr. Lord on physical therapy for dancers. I believe she is very qualified to help any dancer with their particular needs and hope that if you find yourself with an annoying muscle problem or other orthopedic problem you will seek the attention of a good physical therapist that not only understands the body but the DANCER!

Dr. Aisha L. Lord is the founder and owner of ALL Therapy and a lifelong dancer. Dr. Lord has incorporated dance and fitness into every aspect of her life. She has an extensive history in dance originating at the age of 3. Dr. Lord trained at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Performing Arts in New York City, New York. Dr. Lord co-founded a dance company at the University of Delaware, where she later received her Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Sports Science. Afterwards, Dr. Lord performed nationally and internationally with a critically acclaimed dance company, while simultaneously receiving her Master of Science and Doctorate degrees in Physical Therapy from Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City.

As a Physical Therapist, Dr. Lord currently works in the areas of inpatient & outpatient rehabilitation, and home care. With establishment of the ALL Therapy Private Practice Clinic in Washington DC in 2006, Dr. Lord has the opportunity to intertwine her education and experience in physical therapy rehabilitation with her love for dancing, fitness and helping others. Dr. Lord presents seminars and workshops to Dance & Athletic populations on the subjects of Injury Prevention & Rehabilitation.

ALL Therapy Private Practice Clinic is located at 1005 H Street, NE Washington, DC 20002 * (888) 93-ALL PT (932-5578) business * (301) 552-0011 fax * www.ALLTherapy.net.
