Message To Our Students
about Grace's Condition

Dear All,

As you all may have heard Grace has been suffering with viral meningitis with a long hospital stay. She is now home recovering with her cats Cupid and Angel. She is slowly recovering and hopes to be teaching as of Tuesday June 5th if all goes well. She hopes to be back teaching ASAP as she is going crazy at home and is very bored! She thanks you for all the emails, cards, flowers and well wishes you have sent her.

She recommends to all of you to wash your hands several times in the night after dancing with different partners to keep you all safe from getting this terrible sickness. Meningitis is spreading like wildfire and can easily kill you; please wash your hands and if you are sick at all stay home & try not to spread germs around!

Thank you for your well wishes and sharing your lives with us.

Sincerely,

Hugo Badillo

DWG Performance Class
June to October 2007

(Performance Not Mandatory)

This is not a session. Grace has designed this class to be every Tuesday from 7-8 pm at the Promenade from June to October 2007. You still have time to get started! We will be teaching you the DWG performance presented at the 8 y Mas Event on March 9th! The more classes you attend the more you will learn; in choreography classes we repeat the patterns a lot and really work on technique. Please wear comfortable clothing. No Jeans. At the end of this class we will perform the choreography at one of DWG's Venues. NO WORRIES! You can also learn this and not perform it.

Grace's Salsa Tips

Grace Salsa Concept

Tip #1: Many people ask, "how long will it take for me to learn how to dance salsa?" I like to answer that it's all up to the individual person. If you take 2 group classes a week and practice afterwards you will learn quickly. If you are really dedicated then the fastest way to learn is getting our instructional video and practicing, taking a group lesson, practicing afterwards and then taking a private lesson the same week and practicing the "homework" we give you afterwards. If you are pressed for time and cant do group lessons private classes can really help you work out the kinks. If you are scared to spend the $ on a private then split a private class with a friend. Check out our Private Lesson Packages in our online DWG Store.

Tip #2: Being mean to someone who says no to your request of dancing is something I just can't stand for! I will mention it every single month till there is a month when a man who asks me to dance doesn’t make it certain to make me feel terrible for daring not dance with him at his request. The next time someone does this to me I will tell them to read tip #2 in this month's newsletter so they understand how bad they make us gals feel. Since I am personally recovering from meningitis I hope nobody makes me feel guilty for saying "no" to their request. Us ladies aren't your property afterall. If we say no, the world isn't out to get you; we just may be tired, sweaty or all danced out!

Email from Grace's Last Workshop!

Dear Grace,

Just wanted to drop you a line to thank you and compliment you on the workshop Saturday.

I thought you explained and demonstrated things wonderfully. I also read the Workshop Notes and was impressed with the exercises suggested and the clarity and succinctness your summary of the essence of dance, movement, and balance.

Balance exercise #2 reminded me of an asana we do in Yoga called appropriately the "balancing pose" which is designed to improve balance. I'm confident that with practice my ability to spin and dance "gracefully" will be greatly improved now that I understand the Why and How.

Sincerely,

B

DWG Students Win Salsa Contest at Club One

ClubOne Beg Salsa Competition Results

Congratulations to Anthony and Patricia who won the Beginners Dance Contest at Club One!

We are so proud of you both. Anthony and Patricia have been Dancing With Grace regulars at the Promenade and Gardels Dance Lessons for many months now.

Email from Anthony the day after the contest:

Thanks so much for all of your support and guidance. It has helped me tremendously in my developement as a salsero. I read my notes just before the competition. Written in big bold letters was the tip " Stay in the open position when dancing to a medium paced song. Hugo, I closed only once, and that was to do Grace's basic walk. It was fantastic. Patricia and I were having so much fun. Your style of teaching is so smooth. I love it. Keep up the good work. I'm looking forward to the performance class. I'll have to play catch-up. See you soon.

Anthony (Antonio) 1st Place :)

Email from Patricia:

Dear Hugo and Grace,

I just want to thank both of you for the opportunity to take private classes with you. My first private class was several months ago when I first started taking salsa classes on a regular basis. My brother allowed me to tag along with him to a private class.

More recently I took classes with my dance partner. I am convinced that the time and effort that you both put in with us has greatly enhanced our dancing skills, not only as partners, but individually as well. When we took classes with Grace, you gave us so much insight into dancing (with grace) together. You showed us simple moves that look good and corrected a few things that didn't look so good as well. You taught us that it is not important how many combinations you know, but how smoothly you can implement them.

And our class with Hugo was just icing on the cake. Hugo, you offered another perspective such as musicality and how to listen for certain nuances in the music. Additionally, you assisted me in perfecting my cross body lead and my turns. My partner and I learned so much in the few hours that we spent with the two of you.

Individually each of you adds a unique perspective to both partners. Being trained by both of you, multiplies the reward. I am so grateful for the individual attention you have given my partner and me. And I appreciate the hard work, dedication and joy you bring to salsa dancing.

Gracias,
Patricia Hall S.

Congratulations to Billy Hall (who was student of the month last month!) and Marlita Hill Who took 3rd place in the same contest! Marlita and Billly only practiced one time prior to dancing in the contest! Way to go! We are so proud of you!

9. Physical Therapy for Dancers

ALL Therapy is a Physical Therapy Practice specializing in the care of dancers, athletes and general orthopedic populations.

Recently, I (Grace) had the opportunity to hear a great lecture by Dr. Lord on physical therapy for dancers. I believe she is very qualified to help any dancer with their particular needs and hope that if you find yourself with an annoying muscle problem or other orthopedic problem you will seek the attention of a good physical therapist that not only understands the body but the DANCER!

Dr. Aisha L. Lord is the founder and owner of ALL Therapy and a lifelong dancer. Dr. Lord has incorporated dance and fitness into every aspect of her life. She has an extensive history in dance originating at the age of 3. Dr. Lord trained at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Performing Arts in New York City, New York. Dr. Lord co-founded a dance company at the University of Delaware, where she later received her Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Sports Science. Afterwards, Dr. Lord performed nationally and internationally with a critically acclaimed dance company, while simultaneously receiving her Master of Science and Doctorate degrees in Physical Therapy from Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City.

10. Dance Can Make You Fall In Love! Read this testimonial

Email from our student Kelly:

Grace,

I am writing to say a special thank you to you. You have affected my life in a profound way and don't even know it!

Last year, I took some dance classes with you at Johns Hopkins. I was not a student but I read about your classes online and decided to give them a try. While doing the Merengue, you asked me if I was Dominican. You said something about the way I danced looked naturally Dominican...

I actually am half-Dominican (my father), though I was raised by my mother who never acknowledged that part of my heritage. Your comment made me feel more comfortable with a part of me I never really explored and I was really grateful for that.

More importantly, you made me love dancing, to be more confident in my abilities and to stop fearing salsa. Something about your technique (finding the one beat) made me think that if I could feel some rhythm in the music, I'd be able to dance to it.

I wasn't able to continue the lessons at Hopkins (time and money) but I have always remembered how much I admired you and learned from your classes. Last summer, I met my fiancé and we met-believe it or not- DANCING! We were at a party and he asked me to dance Merengue with him and the rest is history. He fondly remembers how, that night, we were dancing Bachata and I tried to do a move I learned in your class, dancing Bachata cheek to cheek! Apparently, I also learned from you some tips on how to flirt!

Anyway, we have been dancing almost every weekend (and sometimes weeknights) ever since. He has also made me love dancing and be more confident. I have learned how truly great dancing can be when you have the right partner! I hope that he gets to meet you. I have been talking to him for a year about your class and how I learned so much and how we need to take some classes for our wedding so we can do some serious salsa!

Thank you so much for being such an inspiration. You have no idea how you have inspired so many people...

With gratitude,

Kelly
