Message to Our Students:  What Are Your Priorities?

Dear All,

Thank you thank you thank you so much for supporting our evening at The Belvedere. It was just wonderful. Our continuation of Kasbah is a smash hit as well and we are very grateful. This month I wanted to put things into perspective.

What are "Grace's" priorities? Where am I from time to time in the Salsa community's other events?

I do much more than teach, train and promote. I am now the Talent Chair of the Hispanic Youth Symposium, I write for The Latin Opinion Newspaper, Magazines Like Expresión and Sen Baltimore, I write for my web site, I write this newsletter and for www.salsasabios.com and www.senbaltimore.com, I organize fund raisers for charities like Hands Across America, and I have just finished directing and producing our DVD's in two languages, and started a new Salsa T-Shirt Line coming out soon on our web site! But before I do all those things I set priorities. God is my first, my Husband is my second Priority, Charity is my third priority, then Family, Friends are next and my business, although important, comes last. Because I set my priorities in this way sometimes it can seem that I am not being supportive of other salsa happenings in the community. This is not my intention or the intention of our company. One of our instructors or promoters is always at salsa community events and DWG isn't just myself and Hugo but our instructors, promoters and students. DWG supports the entire salsa community regardless of my presence or the presence of my husband.

If you went to the Belvedere recently you noticed that every table supported/promoted the entire salsa community including every single major promoter, instructor, DJ, and event in the mid-Atlantic region. DC, VA, MD and PA were represented. Colleges were represented. Salsa in the News was represented. The Women of Salsa was represented and so on. This is our way of showing love and appreciation to everyone everywhere because Hugo and I cant be everywhere all the time. Did you notice that every instructor I promoted on those tables wasn't there? DWG takes no offense; as professionals we understand they are working, have other priorities that come before dance or that they are just simply tired. Even one of my own instructors Niss wasn't there? Were we upset? No. We assume that his family priorities are set before dance as it should be and applaud him for it.

What are your priorities? Cant make it to an event? Don't apologize, we understand and support you and your priorities in life. Whether professional or otherwise, DANCE ISNT SUPPOSED TO BE AN OBLIGATION, just pure fun...

Thank you for being part of Dancing With Grace and for spending your summer nights with us!

Sincerely,
Grace, Hugo & the DWG Team

Student Testimonial Emails

Sarah

Hi, Grace! I'm still in high spirits from last night's grand opening you & your team organized. The ballroom was absolutely amazing. It encompassed so much that reflects you & your style -- classy, elegant but not snobby, decorated, pleasant, detail oriented, etc.
I am so happy for your success! You've done an amazing job and I want this transition to the Belvedere to continue that success.

Best wishes,

Sarah

Mike Fok

Congratulations on such a perfect venue and event. I had such a wonderful time last night. Belvedere is great, but it's what you guys have done that has made it a wonderful place to come for a night of dancing. You're great hosts. I'm glad you were both there last night. There's a special magic to be around a couple like you. The DJ played the right mix of music. Parking is convenient. The bar was inexpensive. I heard nothing but rave comments from people I've talked to. And I think the intermittent schedule may actually be about right. I hope we can come out often.

Helping Others Through Dance

DWG's hopes for students to not just learn to dance but to learn to love dance so much that they want to help others with it! DWG works very hard
and tries to do at least 1-2 charity events per month to help raise $ for a good cause or to entertain others that wouldn't normally get to dance. This month's fund raisers are for a student with bone cancer and for a medical missions team going to Cali, Columbia. Attending these events will help a family struggling and
help a team of champions go and give medical care to those who have never had the opportunity to see a doctor.

Volunteers helping out with Maryland Hispanic Youth Symposium

This month's Bravo Award goes to a group of students that have decided to set aside their valuable time to help children through volunteering to help Grace (who is the chair of Hispanic Youth Symposium Talent Show). The Symposium is a four day/three night college campus experience where sophomore/junior level high school students attend workshops stressing academic achievement, career choices, community service and civic responsibility. They perform and try to win scholarship money for their college career in the future. This year all of these volunteers will help backstage & be mentors to the children helping inspire them to their full potential of greatness! Thank you all! You truly deserve this BRAVO AWARD!

Grace’s Salsa Tips

Grace's Salsa Tips

Tip#1: Don't do one basic step after another basic step over and over again. She can tell that you are thinking. Keep it moving by doing Cross Body Leads from closed to open positions and basic turns! Remember that if you freeze out there you can easily go back to basic steps and turns until you are ready to move forward with a new pattern.

Tip #2: Clothing: Have you ever worn something that made it more difficult for you to dance? For example, heavy shoes, pants that are too long, skirts that get caught in your shoes. This happens to dancers everywhere. You buy an outfit, it looks fabulous, and then suddenly when you are dancing your clothing malfunctions and you end up with a tear in your clothes, or something around your ankles by mistake!!! This recently happened to me! Before leaving the house, do a few basics and see if you feel comfortable. Ladies, make certain to try Suzie-Q's/footwork so that your heel doesn't get caught in your skirt by mistake! Don't forget to wear boyshorts! No G-Strings or flying solo when you dance; boyshorts are the perfect solution!

YOU SMELL SO WELL! OR DO YOU?

You Smell

We all smell.. some good.. some bad.. some really funkylicious. Its okay, you aren't alone. Sometimes the problem is that people who are already sweating put on deodorant again, on top of the last batch they used. This can amplify the deodorant smell x 10 and make you smell worse! Be careful! Some of us don't use deodorant and its a cultural thing. Well, we love all cultures in America but cant stand to smell the funk that may come along with activities that cause you to perspire more than usual. Pretty please with sugar on top, can you use deodorant? Your future spouse and dance partner will really appreciate it and your teacher will too! ha ha.. Feel the funk-dont smell it!

“Love Beyond the Mirror”

a new wrinkle formed today-
the mirror quakes and suddenly I am gray
but for a moment I did to see
the young soul that once stood before me
and when ,on my shoulder, I did feel a tap
it was something telling me not to look back
beyond the mirror I will choose to see
eternity is calling out to me....

Hydration

  • 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated
  • In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is mistaken for hunger.
  • Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.
  • One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.
  • Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.
  • Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.
  • A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.
  • Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%., and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer. Are you drinking the amount of water you should drink every day?

Miesha Blackwell

Dance Baltimore is making Headlines! Recently Miesha Blackwell took a 5 week Dance Baltimore Workshop run by Tiffany Butler teaching students how to elongate their bodies and enjoy life through dance. You can see her in the picture above in the green shirt. Congratulations to Miesha Blackwell, who is an inspiration to many! She is also on our DWG Student Dance Team and performed recently at Arundel Lodge with Urfa, Richard a.k.a. Ricardo, & Matt! Thank you for being an inspiration! To see the entire article click here. Student of the Month

James Earwood

James Earwood is a DWG student who was recently at The Promenade listening to some music prior to class with Grace. Grace was immediately impressed when James not only knew who was singing the salsa song she played, but he even knew some of the words. This was very impressive to her because he doesn't even know how to speak Spanish, but it showed that not only had he purchased the music but listened to it so much that he knew the breaks and words. This is why salsa dancers look so good when they dance; they know the music and can interpret it well! Congratulations to James Earwood for officially becoming a "Salsero" and being the Student of The Month!
