July 2008

Message to Our Students: Relationship

Dear All,

Its July already, and if you can believe it, half of 2008 is gone! Time flies when you are dancing!

This month I want to discuss Relationship. The relationship between student & instructor should be one of mutual respect & openness to discuss your dance needs, fears, concerns & growth potential. After class we must all try not to be afraid to talk to one-another & realize that no matter who your instructor is, you should feel comfortable enough to go to him or her & talk about anything from dance to life events! Yes, it may be difficult for instructors to talk to everyone in the entire night club because they have door/promoting responsibilities. But instructors should try to take the time to chat with their students. Some locations make it easier (ballrooms without loud music or smaller venues) but all in all communicating to your instructor should be part of the learning experience, so the next time you want to chat, just come on by or shoot us an email anytime at to:

  - grace@dancingwithgrace.com,
  - niss@dancingwithgrace.com,
  - hugo@dancingwithgrace.com, or
  - rowan@dancingwithgrace.com.

This month was filled with exciting developments and successful fundraisers. Thank you to all of you who are "Dancing For A Reason" and making salsa more meaningful then just "a good time out" but also a way to help others! This month we were quite the busy bees teaching at Dance For The Cure where we helped raise money to fund the research of esophageal cancer, the disease that my father and uncle died from. Grace also received an award for this event! Hugo and I had tons of fun! To check out photos click here.

Salsa For A Reason II was held at Kasbah to raise $ for one of our students who lives in PA battling Bone Cancer. On this particular evening all the $ generated from our lessons went to this special couple. We managed to raise over $365 for them which will go to help them pay the many co-payments during his treatment. Thank you students. Thank you PA Salsa Meet Up! Thank you Baltimore Salsa Meet Up, for making a difference! We Appreciate you! To check out photos click here.

We also had a wonderful time helping raise over $3,000.00 for Hands Across the Americas Medical Missions Team at Salsa For A Reason III. They will be traveling to aid those who have never had the benefit of seeing a doctor. To see photos click here

I want to thank Claudia Barraza of Towson Dance Studio, David Malek of The Promenade Dancesport Facility, Kat Brouse, our new DWG instructor in training, and Hugo for teaching at this event and not asking for a dime in return. Its instructors like these that we should be learning from, with giving hearts asking nothing in return! A grand thank you to Eric B from Holland who Dj'ed the event for free! Check him out at www.ericb.nl

Thank you again for everything and supporting us through your busy and warm summer!

Sincerely,
Grace, Hugo & the DWG Team

Student Testimonial Emails

Grace Received this email all the way from California. After I responded with some dance advice he wrote me another email. Check out what JR wrote! He is so sweet!

=========================

Hello Grace: I am interested in purchasing both DVDs, because I want solid fundamentals, and some simple, but interesting turn patterns, so if you send the clips I would really appreciate it. I am a beginner with some experience, but intermediate classes are too challenging at this point. Most instructors in my part of town only have those two levels. You also mention advice in your email, and I don't want to take up your
time, but good advice is always valued.
Cheers,
JR

Hello Grace:

Thank you for taking the time to send the articles, and to write some
additional thoughts. As a result, I have decided to purchase your DVDs
without your husband having to send sample clips. If you have taken as much care and precision with the DVDs as you have with your correspondences with me, then I am certain the product will be excellent.

All the best,
JR

News Flash: Private Classes Pay Off For A Romantic Student!

Recently a student wanted to learn salsa to impress his salsa dancing girlfriend. He took group classes at JHU and a few private lessons to surprise her because she is so special to him. Check out his email after he took the lessons and surprised her!

Grace,

So last night was THE night. Wonderful dinner, good bottle of wine, a beautiful evening with a beautiful woman. And the dance was absolutely perfect. She was totally speechless, and we shared a wonderful moment.

I wanted to say thanks, because I know that your effort helped me a lot. I plan to attend the Tuesday group lessons when I can, and I'm sure I'll see you around soon :)

Thanks again,
I.

Helping Others Through Dance

DWG's hopes for students to not just learn to dance but to learn to love dance so much that they want to help others with it! DWG works very hard
and tries to do at least 1-2 charity events per month to help raise $ for a good cause or to entertain others that wouldn't normally get to dance. Helping any of the charities we support by attending is truly doing Salsa For A Reason other than just for "our own gratification". Lets help others whenever we see the opportunity and God, yes God, will certainly reward you for it!

Grace’s Salsa Tips

Grace's Salsa Tips

Tip#1: "Oops, I disrespected my partner". Recently I saw a female student walk off the floor in a rage. I ran over to her, wondering what went wrong? He seemed to be dancing quite well and is a very good lead, so I was concerned. She stated that he was staring directly at her chest and never looked into her eyes once so she walked off the floor.

GENTLEMEN: Sometimes our style of dance causes us to look down often, but no matter how much styling you are trying to do it can inadvertently look as if you are staring at her chest. Please be aware of where your eyes are and how tilted your head is because this can give you a reputation that isn't really representative of who you are as a "gentleman" in this scene. After speaking to the man, he realized it was disrespectful and apologized to her. They laughed it off but, no doubt, he will never forget to look at his partner again!

Tip #2: Earring Mishap: Ladies be very aware of the earrings you are wearing. Just yesterday my earring flew into the wind never to be found again! Some earrings are too heavy, gorgeous but heavy! Choose earrings that are light and make sure to have a backing on them. Sometimes I even double the backing when I can! Watch out for those flying earrings guys!

YOU SMELL SO WELL! OR DO YOU?

You Smell

We all smell.. some good.. some bad.. some really funkylicious. Its okay, you aren't alone. Sometimes the problem is that people who are already sweating put on deodorant again, on top of the last batch they used. This can amplify the deodorant smell x 10 and make you smell worse! Be careful! Some of us don't use deodorant and its a cultural thing. Well, we love all cultures in America but cant stand to smell the funk that may come along with activities that cause you to perspire more than usual. Pretty please with sugar on top, can you use deodorant? Your future spouse and dance partner will really appreciate it and your teacher will too! ha ha.. Feel the funk-dont smell it!

CD of the Month

Salsa of the Caribbean

Salsa of the Caribbean
Puerto Rican Power

Salsa music lovers have been grooving to the tropical sounds of the Puerto Rican Power Orchestra since 1973. In the eighties & early nineties, Tito Rojas was Puerto Rican Power's front man producing such hits as "A Donde Iras" & "Pagina de Amor". In 2007 they released, Salsa of the Caribbean, yet another example of this Orchestra's long lived staying power! Definitely a must have in your Salsa music collection!

“Love Beyond the Mirror”

a new wrinkle formed today-
the mirror quakes and suddenly I am gray
but for a moment I did to see
the young soul that once stood before me
and when ,on my shoulder, I did feel a tap
it was something telling me not to look back
beyond the mirror I will choose to see
eternity is calling out to me....

Happy Anniversary

Happy anniversary to Alex and Niss and to Will (aka DJ Cacique) and Marisol on their wedding anniversary.

Alex and NissMarisol and Cacique
Alex and Niss

Here is a poem for you guys:

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments; love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O, no, it is an ever-fixèd mark,
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wand'ring bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his heighth be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come;
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Sonnet 116
William Shakespeare

By the way, Hugo and I are also celebrating our wedding anniversary this month on July 5th. It has been the best 6 years of my life. Since the loving couples above look so cute, I decided to put a picture of us too.

Grace and Hugo

Congratulations

Ranazul RestaurantThis is, without a doubt, one of the loveliest restaurants I have been to in years. In a word this location is impeccable: Impeccable Service, Impeccable Drinks, Impeccable Wine selections and Impeccable Food that is out of this world. The food is five stars for the price of a three star restaurant! The serving sizes are just right and eating here will take you on a delightful journey to taste buds you never knew existed. The ambiance is ultra sheik with sumptuously soft leather chairs, sensitive lighting, and a great sound system for all to enjoy. This location also boasts an incredible mini-gallery of art for the truly creative collector. After leaving this location guests are enchanted. It’s a rarity to find a restaurant that feels like home but with a royal appeal that leaves you wanting for one more dessert and one more bottle of wine " por favor"! I highly recommend that you take the time to reserve a table at this wonderful restaurant and become one of Ranazul ’ s guests at last; you will certainly go home completely satisfied and feeling like royalty! 10. DJ Corner: Featured DJ Mike Morales, DJ Sonero: DJ Sonero

DJ Sonero is one of the best DJs in the mid-Atlantic region. We honor him today because he is a giver, consistent, and always ready to lend a helping hand. Besides playing incredible music, He and his wife Blanca are always seen together in good spirits; their marriage is a great example to those in the salsa community that think its impossible to be in this business and make a marriage work! They arrive on time to their events and are together through thick and thin. We honor DJ Sonero and thank him for his continued efforts to make Salsa more than just music in the Baltimore/Washington/VA Communities! I strongly urge anyone reading this to hire DJ Sonero for any of their special events and take his word on any of his recommendations about other DJ's as he is a mentor to a great number of new and upcoming DJ Talent! Thank you Sonero and Blanca! We love and appreciate you!

Don't forget to let us know who your favorite DJ's are so we know who to have on the fall schedule! Email grace@dancingwithgrace.com

11. Good Deed of the Month

THE CAUSE
This event, formerly known as the "Sail for Sight", is now a benefit for the kid's sailing programs at the Downtown Sailing Center (DSC) in Baltimore, MD. DSC is a 501 (c.) (3) entity with a waterfront site in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor; DSC existing to provide affordable access to, and education in, sailing to all the people of Baltimore. With a 40 boat fleet and many volunteers, supported by the generosity of charitable foundations, corporate and private donors, DSC enables thousands of at-risk children and persons with disabilities to enjoy an activity thought by many to be available only to the wealthy and able-bodied. All sailors know that sailing teaches “life lessons”. Typically, at-risk kids, after their exposure to the sailing lifestyle at DSC, begin to embrace the work ethic and civility; they often gain an appreciation of the environment and the value of an education. Many become college-bound, thus on their way to reaching their full potential. Your participation in the regatta and post race party will provide financial support to the DSC's community sailing programs. Better still would be an additional tax deductable contribution.

MAKE A GIFT

Through our educational outreach programs, the DSC has taught thousands of people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to sail. To continue to provide these opportunities to inner-city youth and disabled individuals, we need your financial support.

Your donation makes a difference:

  • $25 puts one at-risk child on the water for one day
  • $50 for two days
  • $75 funds 4 hours of S.I.T. instruction
  • $100 puts a disabled sailor on the water for one day
  • $250 puts 10 at-risk children on the water for one day
  • $500 puts a crew of at-risk children on the water for one week

Please support the DSC and be a positive influence in somebody's life! To make a gift, simply write a check and mail it to the address below. You will receive within two weeks a letter acknowledging your donation for tax purposes.
