Helping Others
Through Dance

DWG's hopes are for students to not just learn to dance but to also learn to love dance so much that they want to help others with it! DWG works very hard and tries to do at least 1-2 charity events per month to help raise $ for good causes or to entertain others that wouldn't normally get to dance. Helping any of the charities we support by attending is truly doing Salsa For A Reason other than just for "our own gratification". Let's help others whenever we see the opportunity and God, yes God, will certainly reward you for it!

Event Schedule:

April 5, 2009 - This month Grace is working on Dance For the Cure's 2009 event to raise funds for Esophageal Cancer, the disease her father & uncle died from. Would you like to go? It will be held on April 5, 2009 at Towson University in the gorgeous Cultural Arts Building!

http://www.beacancerdancer.org

May 30th, 2009 - Salsa For A Reason VI Gala (29 S. Front Street, Baltimore, MD ) to help raise funds for our Dominican Republic Orphans SmilePack Project! We will be raising funds to make packages up for the children for school and their hygiene needs. All lesson proceeds that would normally go to Dancing With Grace will go directly to meet the goal of creating as many packs as possible for the children.

We want to inspire you to focus on other's suffering and not your own because when we do this, suddenly we see how blessed and rich we truly are. Sometimes helping someone else helps us put things into perspective. This is why we believe it is better to give than to receive. We will be raising funds to help orphans in the Dominican Republic this year. Would you like to help? If so please go to our May 30th event and take some lessons and/or email Grace to volunteer that evening.

Grace’s Salsa Tips

Grace's Salsa Tips

Tip #1: Ladies, do you have unsightly facial hair? This sounds funny but men spend a lot of time grooming their facial hair and they expect you to do the same. Have 1 runaway hair that pops out on your chin or in the middle of your forehead? Just tweeze it ha ha! Oh, and don't forget to shave your mustache ladies. Okay okay, peach fuzz hee hee!!!!!!!

Tip#2: Have something mean to say about a dancer? The next time you want to say something horrible about someone, look in the mirror and ask yourself how you would feel if someone was saying bad things about you when you danced. You wouldn't like it so don't do it to someone else. Next time, try to find the positive aspect you can point out instead.

YOU SMELL SO WELL!
OR DO YOU?

You Smell

We all smell.. some good.. some bad.. some really funkylicious. It's okay, you aren't alone. Sometimes the problem is that people who are already sweating put on deodorant again, on top of the last batch they used. This can amplify the deodorant smell and make you smell worse! Be careful! Some of us don't use deodorant and its a cultural thing. Well, we love all cultures in America but can't stand to smell the funk that may come along with activities that cause you to perspire more than usual. Pretty please with sugar on top, can you use deodorant? Your future spouse and dance partner will really appreciate it and your teacher will too! ha ha.. Feel the funk-don't smell it!

CD of the Month

Con Todas Las de Ganar - NG2

Con Todas Las de Ganar
NG2

Back in the Fall of 2007, I had the opportunity to dance to El Gran Combo, Willie Rosario, La Sonora Ponceña, Tito Nieves, & NG² - all in the same night, all on the same stage in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. It was incredible to dance to a Salsa line up like that. The experience was like a little taste of Salsa heaven on Earth.

As I think back to that night, we're talking about some of the big guns of Salsa! Decades of music and performance experience under one roof! I was also excited to hear & dance to this relatively young group at the time, called NG². They had only only been around for a mere three and a half years.

NG² put on an impressive, energized performance. They played after Sonora Ponceña and before Tito Nieves, who closed the show. A weaker band might have choked with that kind of performance pressure. NG² held their own that night. Since that incredible evening, I've been hooked on NG²'s groove and music!

Today, the more I listen to NG² and watch what happens on the dance floor when I play one of their songs, I definitely get a sense that Norberto Vélez and Gerardo Rivas are two musicians that are going to definitely keep us dancing for years to come.

NG²'s latest CD release, Con Todas Las Ganar (April 2008) is definitely one for your growing Salsa music collection!

Love the clave & the congas! I'll see you next month!

Is Dancing A Sin?

Have you ever wondered if dance is a sin? Many of us have been taught about God (the creator of Heaven & Earth). What does He say about Dance? To read Grace's article, "Is Dancing A Sin" click here:

Grace would love to know your opinion. Email her at grace@dancingwithgrace.com

Check out the last email I received about this article:

Hi Grace-

I loved your article on dancing.   I grew up being told it was a sin…so I was prohibited from dancing.   So guess what I wanted to do most of my life?  Yep!

BTW…Is there a sinful form of dancing?…of course.   And there is a sinful form of eating, driving cars, watching TV, recreating, etc.

I loved your take on the issue.   Thanks for sharing what you’ve learned and experienced.

As a Baptist Minister, and Christian radio Talk show host I now enjoy dancing with my wife…and I DON’T CARE anymore what the legalists say.

Neil
PS  I’m not much of a dancer…but it’s fun, and I hate the fact that the enemy tried to steal it from God’s people.  Well, I am committed to taking it back!

Student of the Month: Laurie Dudek

Laurie Dudek
Laurie Dudek a.k.a "SweetPea"

Laurie Dudek is a sweetpea salsera! Her charming personality rings true on the dance floor. She is continues to become a better dancer each month and is a pleasure to lead! We are very proud of Laurie and encourage her to continue striving to be the salsera of her dreams. Go SweetPea Go!

Sincerely, Grace and Hugo

Be Not Afraid!

The next time you take a lesson we want you to take a deep breath and allow yourself the opportunity to enjoy your lesson without fear. People have fears all the time and they vocalize them. Have you ever said this?

  • I have two left feet.
  • I have no rhythm.
  • Maybe I will be good in a few years.
  • I just can't get it.
  • I am frustrated.
  • I can dance but not like her/him.

All of these comments are a little negative. When we let this negativity creep in, it makes room for fear to grow. Fear of not being good, Fear of being off beat, Fear of hurting my partner, Fear of falling. Each of you are incredible people; made unique. There is no one like you and thus you look different from anyone else dancing. This is a good thing. Let's not be cookie cutter images of anyone... and give yourself permission to dance without negativity or fear!

Sincerely,
Grace and Hugo

You are both a great example of what humility is in salsa. Thank you.

We know that you and Hugo will have a long happy life together because you work so hard to make other people have fun and enjoy themselves.

R.

=================================================

After hearing an instructor badmouth you I decided to go and see for myself rather than entertain their opinion. After your lesson I knew that the instructor who said bad things about you was just jealous. You did a great job teaching me, and controlling the class, but I especially noticed your kindness when you helped a student who was clumsy feel good even about making a mistake. It was a pleasure taking your lesson and I look forward to booking private classes with you in the future.

Ranazul Restaurant
Ranazul RestaurantThis is, without a doubt, one of the loveliest restaurants I have been to in years. In a word this location is impeccable: Impeccable Service, Impeccable Drinks, Impeccable Wine selections and Impeccable Food that is out of this world. The food is five stars for the price of a three star restaurant! The serving sizes are just right and eating here will take you on a delightful journey to taste buds you never knew existed. The ambiance is ultra sheik with sumptuously soft leather chairs, sensitive lighting, and a great sound system for all to enjoy. This location also boasts an incredible mini-gallery of art for the truly creative collector. After leaving this location guests are enchanted. It’s a rarity to find a restaurant that feels like home but with a royal appeal that leaves you wanting for one more dessert and one more bottle of wine "por favor"! I highly recommend that you take the time to reserve a table at this wonderful restaurant and become one of Ranazul ’ s guests at last; you will certainly go home completely satisfied and feeling like royalty! Tell them that Grace sent you. Located at: 8171 Maple Lawn Blvd. Suite 170 Maple Lawn, MD 20759; Phone: 301-498-9666

Rueda Fever:
What is Rueda? A rueda is a dance where all couples are in a circle and do a step similar to Salsa but not necessarily the same. They do, however, dance to salsa music and it is the most entertaining dance to watch. Although we do not teach it, there are very capable teachers in Baltimore, DC and VA! Read below! Cuban style Salsa ("Rueda") Class

This dance is taught Sundays from 5 PM to 7:00 PM in Room 115  of "Q" Building on the campus of the Community College of Baltimore County.  That address there is: 800 S. Rolling Road; Catonsville, MD 21228.  There is also a class on Saturdays at 11:30 AM at Crown Dance; 2820 Dorr Ave.; Fairfax, VA 22031.   This is a great way to expand your repertoire of Salsa moves as the steps are all usable in one on one Salsa! ! DanceInTime.com.

AUDITIONS: DanceInTime is recruiting new members for their dance teams.  If you are interested in being considered, please contact Barb Bernstein 301-4646244 or 301-9806043 for audition information and details.  To see past performances by this group, visit: http://danceintime.com/videos.htm#perfvids.
