Soldier of the Year!

Ed Borja

Ed Borja

Hugo, Grace & The DWG Family would like to recognize our very own Ed Borja, instructor for DWG who has recently been sent to the Middle East to protect and serve our country. Whether you are for the war or against, it is our duty as Americans to support our troops and let them know that we are proud that they are keeping their oath and vow to protect the United States of America.  Protecting the innocent people abroad who strive for democracy in their own countries is an honor. We love you Ed!

Sincerely,
Hugo, Grace & The DWG Family

Grace's Salsa Concepts

Grace Salsa Concept

Tip #1:  Gentlemen if your partner cannot do some of the moves you are trying to lead, you either are leading incorrectly or dancing beyond her level.  Never force your partner into any move and never out-dance your partner.

Tip #2:  Ladies, many of you don't realize that your salsa looks different because you slouch and have poor posture.  Try practicing in front of the mirror and watch yourself closely keeping your chin level and shoulders back in a relaxed position. Think tall!

Student Emails

Grace Badillo is an excellent salsa instructor.  I have taken adult salsa lesson with her before and I found that she was a patient and dedicated teacher.  I decided to have Grace come and give a one-hour lesson to our students at Mount Hebron in order to give them an opportunity to experience the Hispanic culture.  During this lesson, students were guided and immediately connected to Grace's teachings.  Grace has taught both adults as well as students ranging from grades 1-12.  From my personal experience after conducting this activity, students displayed great thanks and excitement.  I highly recommend this activity for all who would like to learn something new. Furthermore, I would encourage teachers to try and find a method or strategy to expose your students to a culture outside of their own. I found Grace to be a great asset to this activity.

Sincerely,
Jennifer Patton

We get emails from our students all the time.  Send us your thoughts and possibly  have your email posted!  We care about what you think! Email us

Importance of Listening to the Music

Salsa Music

If you want to be a great salsa dancer one of the things you need to do is develop an ear for the music. By listening and understanding the music you will be able to dance to it better. Listen to it, learn to hear the changes in the music from verse to chorus to breaks in the music and back to the verse.

Suggestions for when you can listen to it would be:

  • Getting ready to come to class Tuesday, Friday or Saturday nights.
  • While you make dinner, a real dinner, not McDonalds okay!
  • While Relaxing: What is that you ask? Whether its while you have a spot of tea or a small glass of wine sit back and relax for once!
  • Getting ready in the morning! Add some salsa to your mornings and put some pep in your step. Be careful and don't dance in the shower okay!
  • In the car while you are driving. Try not taking a cell phone, take a minute, and enjoy the moment and the music. You deserve it.

Salsa Music CD of the Month

Victor Manuelle Decision Unanime

Decisión Unánime
Victor Manuelle

Victor Manuelle has done it again. He is awesome! He has two versions of his current single "Nuestro Amor Se Ha Vuelto Ayer". My favorite track is "Puerto Rico 2006" with 8 time Grammy winner, Eddie Palmieri. "Puerto Rico 2006" is actually a remake of Eddie Palmieri’s original "Puerto Rico" which was released in 1973 and is still a classic to this day. "Dos Generaciones" is awesome too. Victor does a song with Don Omar who sings salsa for the first time. This was quite a surprise since Don Omar is a reggeaton artist. This album with its 14 songs will be a perfect addition to your growing salsa collection.

July Cha Cha by Leslie Darlington:

  • Beginner Cha-Cha-Cha  7-8 p.m.:  Learn the basics!
  • Intermediate Cha-Cha-Cha 8-9 p.m.:  Learn more difficult  intermediate combinations with style and grace.

Leslie Darlington studied ballroom and Latin dancing since the early 1980's. Leslie's dance and performing experience started at age 6 and her classical training extended into college, where she was a member of the Towson University Dance Company. During a winter college break, she auditioned for and was accepted as a dancer for a one ring circus Circus America that performed at the Nissan Center (former Capital Center). After college, she performed with a modern dance troupe called Movement Arts Parasol. During college, she taught dance for Baltimore County Recreation and Parks, Towson University Children's program and Lester Holmes dance studio. Her students have ranged in age from 4 to 74. Soon after learning ballroom dance she competed and taught.  Come take a lesson from Leslie so that you can dance Cha-Cha All night long too!

4.   Salsa News!

Chivas Regal Dance Contest

Congratulations to the winners of the Chivas Regal Dance Contest at Gardel’s.

1st place Jami Jones and Edwin Torres.  Five couples entered the contest and had energy to spare!  At any dance contest we want you to realize that each couple has their own style and interpret the music differently.  We applaud all those people who entered the contest as you were all wonderfully unique and brought joy to the dance floor!  Bravo!

DWG Instructors Retire

Merrill Bender and Yasmin Mughal have been teaching for Dancing With Grace and have both recently gotten promotions in their day jobs which will call them to spend more time working and less time dancing boo hoo!  They will both be retiring from teaching salsa this month.  We hope that they hate their jobs and come back immediately, just kidding!  We would like to wish them all the best and thank them for all their hard work and dedication to art of dance instruction and performing with the Dancing With Grace Team.  May God Bless You Both!  Muuuuahhhhh.

LatinoFest

DWG Logo 3

Although the rain kept some of you away, the Latinofest was a great hit on Saturday.  The DWG Team performed and taught a class of salsa as well.  We even had a dance contest and gave away videos and other prizes!  Way to go DWG Team!  Thanks to Juanita and Shana who helped in the booth!

Americans for the Arts

The U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee today approved level funding for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) at $124.4 million and $141 million, respectively. While we are disappointed that an amendment was not offered to increase funding for these agencies, there are still a few more opportunities to influence the outcome of the final appropriations. The full Senate will still need to vote on this spending bill after they return from the July 4th recess. All members of Congress will be back home during this week-long recess, which provides arts advocates with an opportunity to meet with their elected officials or attend one of their public forums. Please visit the Americans for the Arts E-Advocacy Center http://capwiz.com/artsusa/directory/congdir.tt and enter your zip code to find the district office information for your Congressional Members. Remember, it's an election year, so Members are eager to hear the concerns of their voting constituents.

5. See Our Video Release Benefit Pictures!

The Salsa Videos Release Benefit Party was filled with fantastic food, dancing, performances, prizes, humor and heart! For those of you who missed it we sure hope you check out our pictures in our photo gallery. Each person involved from the dancers to the guests made the night a complete success.  A huge thank you to each of those who contributed to this cause. We couldn't have done it without you! We were able to raise over $1,000.00 for the children!  Thank you for making a difference in the lives of others through your love for dance.  We look forward to doing other events and hopefully raising thousands of dollars for the needy in Baltimore and Beyond!
