Message to Our Students

Dancing For A Reason Part II

2008 started out with a bang for many but for others emotional stresses & family life have taken its toll.  Some have even lost the will to dance & find joy.    Do you find yourself discussing the same problem with 10 different people just to get some answers?  The cure for depression and anxiety is quite simple.  Get up, get out, and help others in need.  My husband taught me long ago, "It could always be worse".  He was right.  Your circumstances could always be worse.  Imagine being 60+ years of age, losing your entire pension, not having a husband, children or family to help you.  This is what one of our students is facing.  How about  being raped & too scared to tell your family?  So I challenge you to help & while you are doing that you can find some joy & take the focus off yourself.  Stop talking to everyone else & just pray about it!  Waiting for an answer builds character!  We hope to see you sometime at any of our fundraisers to help anyone in need.  Specifically you can come to the  SARCC Salsa Dance in Lebanon, PA to support the Victims of Rape.  Grace will be teaching there; would you like to drive with her?  Check out the Good Deeds Section for more information on this event & remember, you arent alone; every day can be new.  Change your focus and you will change your life!  2008 is just beginning!   We hope for each of you that 2008 brings you joy, health and happiness!  Happy New Year & we hope to see you Tuesdays, Satrudays or at our next February Fundraiser event on February 9, 2008  www.sarcclebanon.com

Sincerely,
Grace & Hugo

Great Latina Women In History

Maria de las Mercedes Barbudo

(Puerto Rico, 1800's)

Tired of Spanish rule and their oppression of women and ill treatment of slaves, Maria de las Mercedes Barbudo was one of the first women of her time who gave her life fighting for Puerto Rico's independence.  What will your legacy be?  What are you fighting for?  Who are you helping?  Leave a mark on this world and be the change you want to see in America.  Thank you Maria!  You are not forgotten.

Hugo's Salsa Tips

Hugo Salsa Concept

Tip#1: The number of "moves" or "patterns" a salsa dance knows, does not dictate how well he or she dances. Even though salsa patterns/combinations are in great demand, many dancers lack the technique on how to perform these correctly putting their partners at risk of getting injured (especially during fast tempo music). When you learn a pattern, you should practice it with a partner outside the salsa night club scene to ensure you learn it with the proper technique. .

Tip #2: We cannot enphasize enough the importance of controlling the length of your steps while dancing. When performing or leading turns step short so you do not end up in uncomfortable positions like arching your back or reaching to much. This happens because you step away from your partner while holding hands and turning. Additionally, since dance floors get packed, by controlling your step you reduce the risk of stepping on another persons foot or from being stepped on (OUCH!) while dancing. .

By Hugo Badillo, DWG Director

A Scene In The Dance Club

"Do you want to dance?" he asked

"Not right now, thanks anyway, I hurt my elbow" she smiled.

"Come on!" expecting her to say yes!

"Sorry, I have ice on my elbow because I got hurt" (is he blind?)

"Oh, come on, you can dance with the other arm! Show me what kind of salsera you really are" he said..

After holding in the rage she sat down and ignored his insensitivity.

Finally after realizing she was in pain he asked if she needed some water. By then she was fully annoyed. Guys, dont do this to the ladies out there.  Its rude.  This happened to me last Saturday night after I was clobbered on the dance floor.  Sometimes NO MEANS NO!

Workshop #2 - Men’s Cool Styling Moves (Men Only) (1:45-2:45 pm ): Learn a lot of cool styling moves that you can add to your current dancing. These new styling moves and footwork will allow you to shine while you are leading the ladies.

Women’s Only Workshop

Workshop #1 - Cross Body Lead Arm Styling Drills (1:00 -2:45 pm): Arm styling can be one of the most difficult things to get used to when you first begin and even more difficult when you decide you want to do the "crane", the "palmtree", "the flamenco palm tree" and other technical arm movements. Have you ever had your arm stuck in a strange position while dancing and then had to lift it up to get back into closed position? NOT ANY MORE! Grace decided it was time for some Drills so here it is! A two hour drill class that will prepare you to not be stuck in weird positions ever again while dancing.

Men & Women’s Workshops

Workshop #3 - Balance & Spinning Technique w/Grace & Hugo, Leading Double Turns (3:00-4:00 pm): Our balance and spinning workshop is the most popular workshop we have ever given. Time and time again we have been requested to do this workshop for our students. Learn sound and safe techniques on how to balance and do doubles yourself and on others. Men, its about time you begin your double turns! Do I hear a triple?

Workshop #4 - Salsa Dips (4:00-5:00 pm): Develop the skill of dipping your partner with one hand. Ladies will learn the proper back and pelvic placement, developing the skill to carry your own weight which is essential while dipping! Learn the “player dip” and if we have time, the “Embrace Dip!” used in Grace & Hugo’s latest team choreography!

St. Thomas is known as an idyllic vacation spot today, but its history is not so peaceful. In the 18th century, the island was at the center of a bustling pirate culture, as swashbuckling pirates such as Blackbeard and Drake traded stolen wares in the port of Charlotte Amalie. This world-renowned Caribbean island is home to amazing beaches, gorgeous sea and landscapes and unbelievable duty-free shopping.

One of the largest islands in the Eastern Caribbean, Puerto Rico's landscape encompasses mountains, underground caves, coral reefs, white-sand beaches and an incredibly massive rain forest that supplies fresh water to most of the island. At the same time San Juan, the capital of the commonwealth, is a big city with a bustling business district, glitzy resorts and casinos, as well as one of the most stunning examples of colonial life in the Western world.

On the north coast of Hispaniola, surrounded by beautiful mountain slopes and exotic foliage, sits Labadee®, Royal Caribbean's private paradise. This exclusive destination offers pristine beaches, breathtaking scenery and spectacular water activities. We even have an amazing new Aqua Park for kids. Regardless of where you go, you'll find yourself embraced by the beautiful landscape. Labadee's native charm, along with its natural beauty, make this a destination not to be missed, and only Royal Caribbean can take you there.

Ranazul RestaurantThis is, without a doubt, one of the loveliest restaurants I have been to in years. In a word this location is impeccable: Impeccable service, Impeccable Drinks, Impeccable Wine selections and Impeccable food that is out of this world. The food is five stars for the price of a three star restaurant! The serving sizes are just right and eating here will take you on a delightful journey to taste buds you never knew existed. The ambiance is ultra sheik with sumptuously soft leather chairs, sensitive lighting, and a great sound system for all to enjoy. This location also boasts an incredible mini-gallery of art for the truly creative collector. After leaving this location guests are enchanted.
