Dancing With Grace Newsletter

Message to Our Students

Dear All,

It has been an exciting and amazing month of April and I cant believe summer is almost here! Our trip to the New Jersey International Salsa Congress was a fantastic experience. All salsa dancers should get to experience one at some point. As the Master of Ceremonies, I was able to spend time with and speak to some of the best dancers in the world: Eddie Torres, Griselle Ponce, Jason Molina,, Magna, Burju and Victor, Karisma Dancers, Salsa De Oro, all my Philly Dancer Pals & so many more. It was amazing. I am so proud to have been involved and I thank my Lord and Savior who was with me all the way!

We were also at Dance For The Cure In Baltimore raising money for Esophageal Cancer Research. My father died of Esophageal Cancer and we were happy to help raise $10,000.00 to help our cause! Bravo to Niss of Salsa Now who also volunteered his time to help raise money for this great cause.

I hope to get to see some of my new students at the next two workshops and salsa socials coming up in May and I am also teaching at the Latin Dance World Congress! I truly look forward to it and to being part of your lives as well!

Sincerely,

Grace and Hugo Badillo

Grace’s Salsa Tips

Grace's Salsa Tips

Tip #1: While at the New Jersey Congress I came upon two men who were on the staff. We had a discussion about the women at the congress. They brought up how they would not pay to go to these events because the women are dressed so provocatively and they want to be very careful not to lust after them. I was astonished to find two young men that had morals and principles. Ladies, you can be the best dancer in the world but you don't have to dress like you are on sale at a brothel. Please think twice about wearing clothing that would make a man, or a woman for that matter, lust after you. Instead, wear something beautiful that moves nicely and let them see your talent for what it is. Wearing clothing that is very provocative makes them see your body and not the dance. You are more than a piece of meat and should dress like the princess you are!

Tip #2: The next time you go dancing bring two pairs of shoes. Many times people get sore feet because they wear the same pair for hours that puts pressure on a specific part of their foot. The trick that professionals use is to change their shoes more than once in a night. This alleviates the pressure on a specific part of their foot and helps with pain in the morning! You can also get Blister Block from Walgreens. I haven't had a blister in years!

1. NEWS FLASH

Scoop of the Month: Grace Announced The Official Master Of Ceremonies of the New Jersey International Salsa Congress

The New Jersey International Salsa Congress had a level of dancers and performers unlike any I have experienced in my 15 years of being in the scene. Even many of the children who performed out did themselves and showed that there is great talent in the salsa/mambo world.

I had the pleasure of MCing most of the Congress Thursday/Saturday/Sunday with Dj Sugar Ruiz who was simply a joy to be on stage with; together we made a hilarious team and had the best time! Even Eddie Torres said "I want YOU to be the one who introduces me!"

Just yesterday MJ of the New Jersey International Salsa Congress stated that I and Sugar Ruiz are the official MC's and we are truly grateful! Thank you to the entire team and staff of the NJISC for bringing us a caliber of congress unlike any other. Although there were some glitches, for a first congress in New Jersey, it was simply amazing.

DWG Announces Audition for the "DWG Angels" Dance Team in Tampa

When:  Wednesday, May 19, 2010
Time:   7:30 pm - 10:30pm
Where: Rizing Starz Dance Studio, 4244 Waters Avenue, Tampa, FL
(white building w/blue awnings) across the street from Subway.

What are the DWG Angels?
The DWG Angels will be a group of dancers dedicated to entertaining the general public but more importantly the charities the group is inspired to help. In previous years DWG has helped many organizations through dance (checkout some of the organization DWG and volunteers have helped in the past). This team will not be dancing for personal pride or to please and satisfy egos. This group will consist of believers of God Almighty. This dance team will dance for the disabled, orphans, elderly, rape victims, the sick, poor, homeless, & poor in spirit. All faiths, colors, shapes and sizes are welcomed!

Level of Dancers:
DWG is looking for intermediate/advanced dancers. Since some of you are on the brink of being intermediates, we expect that you prepare and practice dancing alone and/or take as many lessons as possible to be ready before you audition. You can take lessons with us or any other dance company that teaches salsa that makes you feel comfortable. Our dance lessons are on Wednesday evenings (see schedule below) and caters to all levels.

The best thing about being in (our dance group) is the unity we will all feel within the group and everybody sharing the love of dance and the joy of giving to others. We work together toward the same goal. What's the reward? Giving of our personal talents to make others feel joy, feel love, and know that they are not alone in their trials, but that we and God are with them.

Our dance group will perform for many different events and we may even have the opportunity to be televised and invited to perform all over the United States. You will experience, friendship, love, laughs, support and joy. There will be no vanity, drama or malicious gossip about other dance groups tolerated. This is meant to challenges you to greatness within. Team members must be able to deal with constructive criticism or be asked to leave the group. Please read my article: The Use of Constructive Criticism in Dance Education.

Audition Cost: $10

All dancers will be expected to follow a miniature footwork combination and do a few basic salsa dips that we will go over. There will be no cabaret (lifts or splits) expected at this audition. Please note that there are many dancers that have done great in auditions that are beginners. All that some of you need is good instruction. During this audition we will take things nice and slow and progress. No one will be left behind (we will have 3 instructors at the auditions). Give it a try!

Schedule:
7:30-8:30 pm - Scheduled Interviews
8:30-9:00 pm - Presentation
9:00-10:30 pm - Audition

What to Bring:
4 x 6 photo with statistics on the back (height/weight (don't worry ladies, I weight 165! ha ha) dance shoes for audition, (Water Provided).

Group Training/Practices:
Practices will cost $5 each and be once a week on various days that fit the group's schedule; all practices must be paid in advance and are not refundable. DWG will offset the rest of the floor fee for all practices. Most floor fees in studios range from $10-25 per person. FYI: DWG will not make money off these lessons. This will be for the floor fee only; we will pay the rest of everyone's floor fees for them. If God blesses you and you want to pay for everyone's floor fee one day then Thank YOU LORD! ha ha

We hope to see you and cant wait to meet people who care enough to share their talents with others!

Sincerely,

The DWG Team

 5. Is Dancing A Sin?

Have you ever wondered if dance is a sin? Many of us have been taught about God (the creator of Heaven & Earth). What does He say about Dance? To read Grace's article, "Is Dancing A Sin" click here:

Grace would love to know your opinion. Email her at grace@dancingwithgrace.com

Check out the last email I received about this article:

Hi Grace-

I loved your article on dancing.   I grew up being told it was a sin…so I was prohibited from dancing.   So guess what I wanted to do most of my life?  Yep!

BTW…Is there a sinful form of dancing?…of course.   And there is a sinful form of eating, driving cars, watching TV, recreating, etc.

I loved your take on the issue.   Thanks for sharing what you’ve learned and experienced.

As a Baptist Minister, and Christian radio Talk show host I now enjoy dancing with my wife…and I DON’T CARE anymore what the legalists say.

Neil
PS  I’m not much of a dancer…but it’s fun, and I hate the fact that the enemy tried to steal it from God’s people.  Well, I am committed to taking it back!
