January 20009

Message to Our Students:

Dear All

Happy New Year! 2009 is upon us! The year of new beginnings. Whatever you suffered through in 2008 doesn't have to define 2009 for you. Sometimes change depresses people, but I believe change means not focusing on yourself but what lies ahead. This year find a project. Find a place where you can give and help others. This will help you put your own life into perspective & help you see how good you have it. If you're lonely, go help someone. If you lost a loved one, go comfort someone who lost someone, you certainly know how they feel. Use whatever you are going through to help others and you will be more blessed than you could ever hope.

Dancing With Grace has helped develop dancers with heart. Dancers that care about others and use dance to help others and not glorify their own talents. If dance has become all about you, think about how you could use it to help someone, in a school, at a daycare program, at your work. Lift someone's spirits with whatever talent God has given you. Let this year be the beginning of a new you ... a better you ....

We are here to encourage you not only to dance but to love others, encourage others and be the change you want to see in this world.

Sincerely,
Grace & Hugo

Enoch Pratt Free Library charitable organization in Baltimore.  On February 6, 2009, we are hosting a salsa event as a fundraiser for the library. Grace will be teaching to help raise funds for the Library! Grace is also a writer and supports Libraries that provide safe places for children to learn, read, & write!

DWG's hopes for students to not just learn to dance but to learn to love dance so much that they want to help others with it! DWG works very hard and tries to do at least 1-2 charity events per month to help raise $ for good causes or to entertain others that wouldn't normally get to dance. Helping any of the charities we support by attending is truly doing Salsa For A Reason other than just for "our own gratification". Let's help others whenever we see the opportunity and God, yes God, will certainly reward you for it!

This month Grace is working on Dance For the Cure's 2009 event to raise funds for Esophageal Cancer, the disease her father & uncle died from.

Grace’s Salsa Tips

Grace's Salsa Tips

Tip #1: Practice dancing to the songs that you like. While you are practicing, try to listen for the breaks and hits of the music so you can really hit them when dancing socially! To learn how to dance to the changes in the music, do not miss the free workshop "Dancing to the Music Workshop" on January 10th at the Ark. This workshop is free with the purchase of one group lesson.

Tip#2: What should I wear when I go out to The Ark? The Ark is a very classy location. We want to dress to impress at this location! Men, Slacks with really nice guayaberas (bring extra shirts if you perspire a lot). Gals, wear skirts, dresses, and make sure to wear full coverage undies! You don't want to attract the wrong kind of person!

YOU SMELL SO WELL!
OR DO YOU?

You Smell

We all smell.. some good.. some bad.. some really funkylicious. It's okay, you aren't alone. Sometimes the problem is that people who are already sweating put on deodorant again, on top of the last batch they used. This can amplify the deodorant smell and make you smell worse! Be careful! Some of us don't use deodorant and its a cultural thing. Well, we love all cultures in America but can't stand to smell the funk that may come along with activities that cause you to perspire more than usual. Pretty please with sugar on top, can you use deodorant? Your future spouse and dance partner will really appreciate it and your teacher will too! ha ha.. Feel the funk-don't smell it!

Salsa: A Musical History
Various Artists

It's a New Year and I am preaching to the choir this month!

As many of you know the legendary Latin music label, Fania Records was purchased by Emusica, out of Miami, Florida in 2005. The exciting thing about that acquisition is that Fania Records lives on. What is even more exciting is the Emusica is investing in re mastering the Fania catalog.

I recently purchased, Salsa - A Musical History. This 4 CD box set has 58 remastered Fania gems with a 40 page booklet that highlights the artists and the music that continues to live on today and impact our lives.

Salsa - A Musical History is a must have in your Salsa collection for 2009! You can sign up at http://www.fania.com to get the latest updates on the Fania catalog of music.

Have a Happy New Year! See you next month. Love the clave & the congas!

Grace Shoots TV Episode For "Who's Wedding Is It Anyway?"

Sonia & Luis, a lovely couple that will be getting married very soon have been shooting a television show episode with "Who's Wedding Is It Anyway". A show that travels with the bride and groom through all the ups and downs of planning their wedding day. In this episode Grace plays their dance instructor. The producers wanted Luis to pretend to be a terrible dancer and not get it, although he is comfortable with dancing~ (ah... reality TV... isn't reality at all!). So we pretended to be worried about his ability to dance for effect. Be on the look out for this television show that usually plays on the Style or E network!

Be Not Afraid!

The next time you take a lesson we want you to take a deep breath, and allow yourself the opportunity to enjoy your lesson without fear. People have fears all the time and they vocalize them. Have you ever said this?

  • I have two left feet.
  • I have no rhythm.
  • Maybe I will be good in a few years.
  • I just can't get it.
  • I am frustrated.
  • I can dance but not like her/him.

All of these comments are a little negative. When we let this negativity creep in, it makes room for fear to grow. Fear of not being good, Fear of being off beat, Fear of hurting my partner, Fear of falling. Each of you are incredible people; made unique. There is no one like you and thus you look different from anyone else dancing. This is a good thing. Lets not be cookie cutter images of anyone... and give yourself permission to dance without negativity or fear!

Sincerely,
Grace and Hugo

Ranazul Restaurant
Ranazul RestaurantThis is, without a doubt, one of the loveliest restaurants I have been to in years. In a word this location is impeccable: Impeccable Service, Impeccable Drinks, Impeccable Wine selections and Impeccable Food that is out of this world. The food is five stars for the price of a three star restaurant! The serving sizes are just right and eating here will take you on a delightful journey to taste buds you never knew existed. The ambiance is ultra sheik with sumptuously soft leather chairs, sensitive lighting, and a great sound system for all to enjoy. This location also boasts an incredible mini-gallery of art for the truly creative collector. After leaving this location guests are enchanted. It’s a rarity to find a restaurant that feels like home but with a royal appeal that leaves you wanting for one more dessert and one more bottle of wine "por favor"! I highly recommend that you take the time to reserve a table at this wonderful restaurant and become one of Ranazul ’ s guests at last; you will certainly go home completely satisfied and feeling like royalty! Tell them that Grace sent you. Located at: 8171 Maple Lawn Blvd. Suite 170 Maple Lawn, MD 20759; Phone: 301-498-9666

Rueda Fever:
What is Rueda? A rueda is a dance where all couples are in a circle and do a step similar to Salsa but not necessarily the same. They do, however, dance to salsa music and it is the most entertaining dance to watch. Although we do not teach it, there are very capable teachers in Baltimore, DC and VA! Read below!

This dance is taught Sundays from 5 PM to 7:00 PM at the Avalon Studio; 15 Mellor Ave; Catonsville, Maryland. This is also a great way to expand your repertoire of Salsa moves as the steps are all usable in one on one Salsa! www.danceintime.com
